A three-day soccer camp to raise funds for the Riverbank High School boy's team went off very well even if the numbers were down from last year, said Bruin coach Martin Gonzales.
Instruction at the high school field in the basics of dribbling, passing and shooting drew approximately 20 youths ages four to 12.
"Parents remarked how much their youngsters improved just from one day to the next," said Gonzales.
Five-year-old Robyn Graham was among those who came to all four sessions, including morning and evening sessions on Saturday.
"I've come every day too. But her Dad's got the night shift," said her mother on Saturday morning. "She's really enjoying it. We bought her first soccer ball two years ago. They didn't have soccer for girls when I attended Sacramento High."
Robyn's father, Kendall Graham, was formerly a drama teacher at Riverbank High. An enthusiastic swimmer, he is now teaching at Downey High and coaching that school's water polo team.
High school players turned out to instruct the younger kids. There were less than usual on Saturday morning.
High school students love to sleep in on weekends, Gonzales commented. But those absent would be hearing from him.
Sponsors for the camp were Sandra Benitez and CME Mortgage, who paid for the participants' T-shirts.
Parents brought their lawn chairs and parasols and camped out behind the net, some of them reading between glances at their children.
