elcome to the Modesto Chamber of Commerce 2023 Annual Directory, This is an exciting time for the community we live, work, and play in as well as for the Greater Modesto Chamber of Commerce. We went into this year filled with optimism, and a belief that our community and organization was poised for a resurgence in prosperity, engagement, and growth. We have seen proof of both from the start. Our community is eagerly watching the development of theModesto Children’s Museum. We are witnessing the renovations taking place at the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum. Divert Inc., a technology company focused on mitigating food waste, broke ground on their 71,000 square-foot state-of-the-art food recovery facility in west Turlock. Soon after, Valley Milk broke ground on their facility expansion project. Visit Modesto has generated nationwide attention for our Almond Cruise. They have also worked to make a trip to Modesto and the greater region so irresistible, they applied for, with support from partners, and were awarded a California Welcome Center, coming soon to Modesto!

Meanwhile, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce has also been expanding and I will highlight just a few key initiatives. We are excited to officially have our Modesto Chamber of Commerce Foundation up and running. The Foundation board is actively making plans to bring new support opportunities to our community. We have created and added new event opportunities and concepts. The mix of these has us partnering to bring business in front of 8th graders to directly engage in a vendor format. The premise is to inspire and spark interest in joining our future workforce. We have expanded our sustainability efforts which helps us help the business community, county wide, reach their sustainability goals. This is a free service, member or not, which we offer through the California Green Business Network, Stanislaus certification process, for which we are the administrator. We encourage you to engage with us and support our mission of serving the greater Modesto Area. We support regional business and community prosperity through advocacy, collaboration, access to leaders, economic development, connectivity, and business education . Our door is open to you regardless of age, interest, profession, sector of business or industry. We strive to have something for everyone. The Modesto Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc. is a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code Our Foundation Focus: • Scholarship awarding, benefitting business growth and development as well as agriculture advancement and future work readiness success in and around Modesto, Stanislaus County, and the Central Valley region. This focus area provides opportunities to expand the growth and prosperity of our greater business community. • Leadership development carried out by the Leadership Modesto annual project exposes a highly diverse group of professionals to a broad array of business, government, public safety and services, and industry. The classmates fundraise to create an annual community project/gift which impacts a broad community or niche non-profit need from within and around the community at large. A - Advocacy The Modesto Chamber supports local businesses and is an active advocate for the common interest of its members. The Chamber has an Economic Development Committee and a Government Relations Council. These advocacy committees are dedicated and proactive in representing our members and community. They work to address business initiatives and relieve the regulatory burdens businesses face may face. Mocha Magic Is Green Certified

his past December Mocha Magic C afé and B ake Shop received the Green Certification and Owner and Professional Baker Maria Apodaca could not be more proud. “I kind of lived “green” my whole life,” stated Apodaca. “We were mid-

dle class from an ag family. We never wasted anything. We didn’t throw things away. We reused everything. We were very conscientious of that. Then as I got older and bought my own home, I realized how much money you could save by not being wasteful. I have never been a person

who used disposable things.” The Modesto Chamber offers a certification for going green and Apodaca was very interested in that so she applied. She said, “There was a long checklist of things to do. There were some things that we had to change. We eliminated some chemicals and things like that. To me that is a source of pride that I completed all those things and I can say that we are making a conscious effort to do these types of things.” Sticking to the green theme they wrap all their sandwiches in paper and put them in a brown paper bag. They use the brown eco boxes for their salads that double as a plate, microwave safe and compostable. “I just want people to know that it is easier than you think to go green,” remarked Apodaca. “There is a lot of products now on the market that weren’t there 20 years ago. Our

plastic ware is made out of potato starch so you don’t have to just go with what you know. Look around and it is affordable now. It really is not that hard to go green.” The shop on 920 16th Street has been there for over 20 years and for the past four years has been under Apodaca’s ownership. “It took me a while to find a location,” said Apodaca. “This location was actually a coffee shop and sandwich shop that was occupied. A friend of mine told me that she was retiring and interested in selling it. I came and looked at it and I looked at the back and I realized that we could gut the entire back and put a bakery kitchen in. So that is what we did.” As a Modesto native Apodaca knew of the previous business that was called Mocha Magic and she did not want to change the name to keep old and new customers alike, but she did add café and bake shop to it. She has been in the baking industry for about 30 years but started baking when she was 7 years old on an Easy Bake oven. She worked

at Old Tyme Pastries for approximately 22 years. “I loved it,” expressed Apodaca. “I realized this is a real thing. It combined everything, accounting, business, hospitality, and what I like to do baking and talking to people and cake decorating. I am a selftaught cake decorator.” They have a full espresso bar and offer a variety of beverages from a fresh brewed coffee, tea, to lattes, mochas, and blend drinks. They serve breakfast and lunch and an assortment of baked goods like muffins, scones, and cookies and everything is made in house. For breakfast guests can delight in a variety of breakfast sandwiches, frittatas, wraps and for lunch they offer hot and cold sandwiches, as well as soups and salads. “We do custom cakes and custom cookies,” added Apodaca. “We deliver to downtown Modesto for breakfast and lunch catering. a variety that every day is different. I love doing custom orders for people.” There have been some challenges along the way and they were only open one year before COVID hit. Through those challenges they had to remove all the tables and chairs from the inside of the café. They set them up outside the shop in the hallway which made room for more baked goods inside. This was a blessing for bake shop. With great staff, and the ability to create what she wants doing what she loves has made owning her own business a great experience. “I think for me it is the one-onone personalized service that we can provide because we are a small business in a small community downtown,” noted Apodaca. “We are kind of in a business district so we get a lot of regulars that work or live close by. The Walvesco Corporation is a

family business that are new franchisees and new to the restaurant industry. The corporation consists of parents Donna and Stephen Walling, and sons, John, David, and Michael that started this new business venture a few years ago. After looking at several different business models the Midici pizza franchise seemed to fit what they were looking to bring to the area. Owner Operator John explained that they get support from headquarters, for example they brought in a chef from Italy.

“They have been really good working with us,” he said. “They are an emerging brand. It has been an interesting ride. We are glad to have the support at the end of the day and they still allow us to operate independently at the same time.” Several things have changed over the past few years with a name change and COVID. They originally started out as the Neapolitan Pizza Company by Midici and have rebranded to Stone Fire Pizza by Midici and went from mainly dinein customers to now a larger takeout business. “Fortunately we are pizza so it was easy to switch to ‘to-go’ orders,” stated John. “We were kind of already in the right position. We are already in the food industry so we have to be sanitary. The mask was the only new addition. We take all the precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. We are just kind of riding through it.” John explained that their pizza is unique for a few different reasons including the Neapolitan Pizza that was originally created in Naples, Italy hundreds of years ago that is

made with simple and fine ingredients with ovalini mozzarella. There are many offerings on the menu that are made in house like the dough, meatballs with Angus beef and the sauces. Accommodating people with food restrictions guests can get a gluten free crust or a cauliflower crust and they have vegan options at Stone Fire Pizza. Walking into the restaurant with the curves, décor, gold pizza oven, and tree it gives this pizza place a very contemporary and enticing vibe. The atmosphere was designed to resemble Naples, Italy according to John bringing the Modesto community a little piece of Italy. They have an Artisan Pizza that guests can customize with the six different sauces and a variety of toppings like a cracked egg, vegan sausage, goat cheese, grape toma-

toes, arugula, Kalamata olives and artichokes to name a few. The BBQ Chicken, the Double Pepperoni, Chicken Alfredo are a few of the pizzas that are guest favorites. Their signature dessert is the Nutella Calzone that has Nutella, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and powdered sugar. “It is a special dessert that everybody really likes,” added John. “It (the fig, the pig, and the goat) is a special tasting pizza for sure and it is a guest favorite. People really love our cauliflower crust. They offer an exclusive pizza of the month, which is when they

introduced the fig, the pig, and the goat that gained so much popularity that they will be adding it to the regular menu. It is a fig or jam based pizza with goat cheese, parmesan and prosciutto. “Our goal is to make everyone have a great experience and kind of make ourselves different than everybody else and we have great pizza,” remarked John. “We have regulars that we have built over time. Some of my favorite moments here are really meeting a lot of the local people and really people from all over the place.” Stone Fire Pizza has a Happy Hour from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday where any beer or wine is $5 as well as their meatballs and Nutella Calzone. They have a few beers on tap and have some local offerings like Blaker Brewing’s Honey Babies Blonde Ale and Plowed Under IPA and a few wines. They have lunch specials and different promotions that can be found on their website or social media sites. “We are thankful for the support that we got from the mall and from our regular followers and community,” noted John about surviving through COVID. “It has worked out really well. It has been a good positive turnaround and we have been pretty fortunate so we can only go up from here.”

Behind these tantalizing creations is Executive Chef and owner David Alonso. With an extensive background in the restaurant business from dishwashing, cleaning, cooking, creating recipes, to managing, Alonso has spent more than 20

It was a hit among those that tasted it and launched her career path into a new direction. “My whole family and friends were beating down my door to get some for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Prince-Claxton said. “So, I found myself with a whole lot of orders.” She was still working her fulltime job, but when circumstances changed and she began spending more time caring for her granddaughter, the idea of making and selling the pies started to take shape. Through lots of careful planning and hard work that idea has morphed into a brick-and-mortar

HISTORIC GUIDE TO MODESTO 1870-1940 landmark locations Modesto was founded as a village in October 1870, when the Central Pacific Railroad purchased approximately one square mile of land and began selling lots. Before the Central Pacific Railroad gave shape to the village, Americans had already settled in the area and began farming. Several villages sprang up to provide services to these people, among them cemeteries. Modesto’s landmarks span different eras of the city’s history. There are tours of specific eras, which include summaries of the period highlighted. This tour, however, focuses exclusively on established landmarks. Buildings, trees, and objects worthy of preservation are not limited to this list of landmarks. Indeed, as you walk or drive through Modesto you may see many buildings that represent Modesto’s rich history that are not on this list.

Robert McHenry arrived in the northern San Joaquin Valley after the Gold Rush. He purchased Bald Eagle Ranch, 4,000 acres of farmland north of town and in 1878 moved to Modesto as a banker. He built his Italianate mansion in 1883 and in 1884 became president of the First National Bank of Modesto. McHenry was also the first president of

In 1911, the Modesto Business Men’s Association proposed an “Ornamental and Electric Arch” and held a slogan contest. The second-prize slogan, “Water Wealth Contentment Health,” submitted by S.R. Harbaugh, was selected. The arch is the oldest slogan arch in the country and one of the few remaining.

MODESTO ASH TREE, 3RD STREET AT SIERRA DRIVE, BEFORE 1911

A new kind of ash tree was discovered in 1927 and determined to be compatible with Modesto’s climate. This tree is over 100 years old, well past its expected lifespan.

The Cressey family was one of Modesto’s most prominent families. Albert Cressey, an early Central California pioneer and strong advocate of irrigation, organized the Modesto Bank, was instrumental in securing the right-of-way for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was president of the Stanislaus County Agricultural Association. George, the original owner of the house, continued to serve the community in various ways.

Department and the building opened in October, 1932. In 1936, artist Ray Boynton, assisted by local artists, painted pastoral murals in tempera for the public lobby of the building. Most of the original murals remain.

Using “canticrete”, a new type of construction, this foot bridge replaced two bridges and a ferry at the same site. The bridge has been known as the “Lion Bridge” for the recumbent lions at its thresholds.

Marking one of the few entrances to the City, the “Grecian Temple” design was modeled after the Sunol Pump Station. The pump house was design by A. O. Carley, an employee of the city’s public works department.

Originally installed in the tower at the old 10th Street fire station, the bell has been moved several times and is now in front of Fire Station 2 on Chicago Avenue.

This Norman castle-inspired house was built by Edwin Hawke, the manager of J.C. Penney and the owner of the Hawke Crop Dusting Service. He founded the E.R. Hawke Departments store at 1013 10th Street in 1934.

MCCLURE COUNTRY PLACE, 1500 N. MCCLURE ROAD, 1882

Bailey Peyton Hogin, a Confederate army veteran, built this house, which was also the birthplace of Grafton Hogin, Stanislaus County sheriff from 1922 to 1949. Ernest McClure purchased the property in 1904, lured to the area by advertisements that promised water and plenty.

ENSLEN PARK, 1906

After donating Graceada Park to Modesto, James Enslen donated this property from another park. Planned by John McLaren, who designed Golden Gate Park, it once held a small zoo. The Modesto Women’s Improvement Club supervised construction and landscaping.

Built for Modesto Lodge No. 1282 of the Brotherhood of the Protective Order of Elks, the basement held a boxing ring that was donated and dedicated by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Dempsey.

MODESTO PIONEER CEMETERY, 905 SCENIC DRIVE, 1852

This land belonged to a land grant signed by President Abraham Lincoln, originally a family cemetery. In 1872, the Wildley Lodge, I.O.O.F. purchased five acres for its use.

The cemetery now known as St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery was renamed in 1875, after the St. Stanislaus Parish was organized.

This shingled bungalow was the home of John Walthall, a great nephew of President James Madison. He served as Stanislaus County District Attorney for two years and later was in private practice. Walthall was active in various civic organizations.

GUNDLACH HOME, 410 ELMWOOD AVENUE, 1937

This Provincial building is clad primarily in plaster with a brick-covered front gable. The original owner of this Craftsman bungalow, W.H. Howell, was appointed Modesto’s postmaster in 1910. The Howell family were early settlers who dry-farmed in the Turlock area.

WHEAT BARGE TREE, TUOLUMNE RIVER REGIONAL PARK

This magnificent valley oak is more than 150 years old. Folk history suggests this tree is where barges tied up on their way down to the Tuolumne River, transporting wheat to market from Waterford. The tree may have been in use as early as the 1860s and 1870s. The tree, a native of New Zealand, was a gift to the community from the Native Sons of the Golden West in 1916.

Lloyd Gross, the original owner of this Tudor house, served during World War I as a pilot and later became an aerial photographer. His aerial views of Modesto in the early 1920s are in the McHenry Museum archives. His wife, Ida Foote Gross, became a well-known local artist after her retirement from teaching in 1961.

This Mission Revival, white stucco house with a red tile roof and wood detailing is surrounded by a white brick fence enclosing a large garden.

The California/Spanish Eclectic House, similar to those in Los Angeles, was built for Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Hathaway. Hathaway operated the Modesto Grocery at 927 10th Street.

EARL ANDERSON RESIDENCE, 501 MAGNOLIA AVENUE, 1922

This is a Craftsman bungalow with hipped gables. A wrap-around porch was added after the house was built but it blends well with the style of the structure.

This stately structure successfully combines Colonial and Classical elements. The original owner, Warren S. Tillson, was the son of the founder of the Modesto Lumber Company and later its president.

The Municipal Gold Course was constructed in the mid1930s; the land was originally part of the Modesto Aviation Field. When the airport moved, the property became the golf course.

This Provincial-style house is part of the Coldwell subdivision, which was formed on August 24, 1903, and owned by Virginia Coldwell.

FOY APARTMENTS, 1418-1430 I STREET, 1912

This Neoclassical building contains 16 studio units advertised as the most modern apartments in Modesto when it opened. Each apartment was equipped with two Murphy beds, one behind a leaded-glass china buffet in the dining room and the other behind a beveled wall mirror in the bedroom.

SILVA HOUSE, 216 W. MORRIS AVENUE, 1925

This California bungalow with wrap-around porch was originally owned by William J. ‘Billy” Silva and his wife Evelyn D. Silva. Billy Silva became the local Studebaker dealer in 1919 in partnership with Claude Shackelford. In 1946 he was appointed to the California Fish and Game Commission.

CENTENARY METHODIST CHURCH, 201 NEEDHAM AVENUE, 1920

This two-story Classical Revival building with Romanesque features was constructed in 1920 for the Centenary Methodist Church and was occupied by that congregation until 1960.

DR. JOHN KENNEDY “DOC” RANSOM HOUSE, 305 MAGNOLIA AVENUE, 1906

The Shingle style was an unusually free form and variable style with details that are strictly classic and grounded in the Colonial Revival tradition, with a raised first story and a recessed front porch. Its distinctive A-frame shape, shingle surfaces and gigantic gable are typical. “Doc” Ransom was a leading member of the medical community in Modesto from 1920 to 1965, and served as County Coroner for over three decades.

• Modesto, founded in 1870, was originally to be named Ralston, after a prominent San Francisco Banker involved in the town’s beginnings. However, when he declined, the founders instead named the town for Ralston’s modesty, using the Spanish word Modesto. • Modesto’s Arch, built in 1912, displays the slogan Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health. This, however, was not the winner of the slogan contest held by the Modesto Business Men’s Association. The winning entry was Nobody’s Got Modesto’s Goat, which was passed up in favor of the second place and present slogan. • The movie classic American Graffiti was based on the boyhood experiences of producer and writer George Lucas, who grew up in Modesto and cruised 10th and 11th streets as a teenager. The actual cruise route was commemorated in 2012 and is now a walking tour. • Modesto is home to the world’s largest winery, E & J Gallo. • Modesto has twice won the distinction of being named an All American City by National Municipal League. This award recognizes citizen action in community affairs, working with elected officials to make their city a better place to live. • Modesto has been named a Tree City, USA numerous times in recognition of the conscientious planting of it’s urban forest that includes over 100,000 trees lining city streets and parks. These trees are owned and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Modesto, the computerized street tree maintenance program and that won our City awards as well.

• Modesto’s population is approximately 212,000. Modesto holds the County seat for Stanislaus County and is the 19th largest City in California. • Modesto is home to the very first junior college in California, Modesto Junior College. • The third largest planetarium calls Modesto home. The Great Valley Museum and Planetarium. The planetarium includes top-of-the-line projection instruments that display unparalleled images of the night sky and full-dome planetarium films onto a 40-foot suspended dome ceiling for an audience of up to 100 people. The planetarium hosts telescope nights as well as many other events open to the community. • Stanislaus County is responsible for feeding 60% of the country. Top agricultural products include nuts, dairy and fruit. • Modesto has the largest Garden Club in California with over 800 members • Modesto is known as the Cruising Capital and the Classic Car Capital of California. • Rockabilly got its start in Modesto. The music was created in Modesto around 1938 by Maddox Brothers and Rose and called Hillbilly Boogie. It was heard around the country via radio and would become Rockabilly. The slapping base technique of brother Fred Maddox put the beat in the rhythm and blues that would become the foundation of Rock ‘n’ Roll. • Modesto’s Flower Clock is one out of only 12 flower clocks that exist in the world. • There are more than 20 public art displays in Modesto with 14 of them located in the downtown area.
