Out and About is your guide to upcoming events in and around the Riverbank area.

 

Oak Valley Art Society’s Fall Art Show is set for this coming weekend. The show will be staged at the Escalon Library on Second Street on Saturday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 22. Show hours Saturday are noon to 5 p.m.; Sunday hours are noon to 3 p.m. A reception with the artists, including refreshments and awards is scheduled on Sunday, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is a member show, but anyone interested in joining the Oak Valley Art Society may call Evelyn Cooper at 209 838-3095. A variety of art work, in multiple mediums, and also including photography, will be on display. All are welcome; no fee to attend.

Join with friends and neighbors on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Riverbank Community Center for an evening of painting fun. The event begins at 7 p.m.; attendees are asked to arrive a little early to set up. The City of Riverbank and the Chamber of Commerce are joining together to host this fun filled evening. Beer and wine tickets may be purchased at the door as you learn to paint a beautiful masterpiece. To register go to the website of Pinot’s Palette and click on the Riverbank event. The cost is $45 for this three-hour event. For more information, call 863-7150. Must be 21 to attend. Space is limited; register early. Proceeds from this event will help with trips for the youth of Riverbank.

Golden Agers weekly dances are open to those 50 and older from throughout the Central Valley at the Riverbank Community Center. Doors open Wednesdays at 9 a.m.; the center is at 3600 Santa Fe St., and first time guests are admitted free. The annual membership fee is $12 and each Wednesday members pay $5 and non-members can enjoy a few hours of music and dancing for $6.

The 2017 Stanislaus River Salmon Festival Committee is once again hosting an art contest in conjunction with the 2017 Stanislaus River Festival. Young artists are encouraged to celebrate the annual return of Chinook salmon to the Stanislaus River through participation in the Salmon Festival Art Contest. Artwork should reflect the theme “Through the Eyes of Salmon.” All kindergarten through eighth grade students attending school or residing in communities near the lower Stanislaus River, including Riverbank, may participate. Artwork is due Wednesday, Oct. 25; rules include: each entry must be the original work of the contestant; use pencil, pen, paint, torn paper, glitter, or other art media; use 9-by-12 or 8½-by-11 inch paper or poster board for artwork. Also, artwork should be completed with the long axis of the paper on the horizontal; artwork should be in color; copyrighted, syndicated or clip art images are not allowed; computer or copy machine aided entries are not allowed. Each participant may submit only one entry. Entries may be delivered directly to: Salmon Festival Art Contest, Attention: Lisa Dolling, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Stanislaus River Parks, 17968 Covered Bridge Road, Oakdale, CA 95361. Mailed entries postmarked by Oct. 25, 2017 will be accepted. The San Joaquin Valley Swiss Echoes, a singing and yodeling club in Ripon since 1947, is having its annual fall concert and dance on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Swiss Hall in Ripon, on the corner of Manley and East Main streets. A fun-filled Cabaret Night is sure to be the highlight of the evening. You will hear a variety of folk songs and yodels. There will also be a raffle with fun prizes, followed by dancing to the tunes of the Ron Scheiber Mike Inderbitzen Orchestra. Admission to the concert and dance is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Children under 16 are free.

Sons of Norway Garborg Lodge 6-56 is hosting its 69th Annual Lutefisk Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Modesto Senior Center, 211 Bodem St., corner of Scenic and Bodem, Modesto. Doors open at 3 p.m.; dinner served at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, kids under 10 eat for free. For tickets or more information, contact Linda at 209-572-0323. The Village Dancers will be there to perform and there will also be prize drawings.

The local REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club gathers for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 25. The 22nd Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Escalon United Methodist Church is set for Saturday, Oct. 28. Hours for the event are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the church is at 2000 Jackson Ave., Escalon. Featured will be handmade crafts, gifts and holiday items, needlework, a drawing for a quilt, wood crafts, homemade jams/jellies and frozen ready-to-bake homemade pies. You can also take time to enjoy a soup/pie lunch as part of the bazaar event, with tickets priced at $7 per person. For more information, call the church at (209) 838-2792.

First Congregational United Church of Christ in Murphys is hosting an Estate Sale consisting of furniture including TVs, lamps, kitchenware and other household and boutique items. Refreshments can be purchased to enjoy while treasure hunting. Sale dates are Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Church Fellowship Hall, 509 Algiers St., Murphys. All proceeds will benefit church ministries in the community and abroad.

ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world.
