The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, July 1 through Monday, July 7. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JULY 7
Battalion 2: Crews completed weekly apparatus maintenance.
Battalion 5: Crews performed Monday apparatus checks and station yard maintenance, company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed Target Solutions assignments.
Engine 29 trained on flowing the master stream and engineer pump operations.
SUNDAY, JULY 6
Battalion 2: 4:50 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to the 6600 block of Gallop Lane in Riverbank for an unknown type of fire. They arrived to find a port-a-potty on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews checked on previous vegetation fires, ensuring they had no hot spots.
Engine 27 trained on probationary firefighter signoffs.
SATURDAY, JULY 5
Battalion 2: 2:13 p.m. – Brush 24, Grass 21, Grass 23, Water Tender 21, Water Tender 23, BC 202 and BC2 responded to Lake Road at the Turlock Lake Tuolumne River campground for a vegetation fire with Cal Fire. The fire was in the river bottom area and grew to 1.5 acres prior to containment. Crews contained the fire quickly and extensive mop up including falling several trees took several hours. Special thank you to Rehab 91 for supporting this incident.
3:22 p.m. – Engine 19, Quint 22, and BC202 responded to Albers Road for a vehicle accident.
Battalion 5: 7:12 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 26 and BC5 responded to a two-car accident on 26-Mile Road at Parsons Ranch Road in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to find an accident that produced a total of four patients. The injuries ranged from minor to moderate. All patients were transported to local hospitals. One patient was pinned in the vehicle and needed to be extricated. CHP was on scene and is completing the investigation.
10:30 p.m. – Engine 28, Quint 22 and BC5 responded to a solo crash at Sierra and Orsi Road in Oakdale. A driver lost control of his car, struck a metal fence gate, and a horse trailer then subsequently rolled several times. The driver was ejected and pinned under the vehicle. Engine 28 acted quickly and used the jaws of life to raise the car off the patient. Quint 22 arrived on scene and their paramedic administered ALS interventions until an ambulance arrived for transport. Oakdale Police Department was on scene to conduct the investigation.
FRIDAY, JULY 4
Modesto Fire Department companies and personnel participated in the Fourth of July Parade in downtown Modesto.
Battalion 2: 9:46 p.m. – Multiple MST resources responded to Companion Lane and Claus Road in Riverbank for a vegetation fire. The fire was threatening multiple structures when firefighters arrived. The fire was contained at approximately 2-3 acres with one barn completely destroyed. No other structures were damaged. Crews remained on scene for an hour completing mop up.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 and BC5 attended a Fourth of July block party in Oakdale to celebrate the holiday with residents.
9:28 p.m. – Water Rescue 29, E27 and BC5 were dispatched to a water rescue where five people had become stranded in their raft on the river. The rescue took a significant amount of time due to the low flows, poor visibility, and the heavy brush where the victims were located. The Stanislaus Sheriff’s Department drone proved very helpful as we honed in on the raft and guided our boat to them using screen images of the area.
THURSDAY, JULY 3
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks, and attended quarterly EMS training.
7:11 a.m. – Engine 26 responded to a fire alarm activation at Riverbank High School. A piece of cloth was left on a stove top and caught fire. Engine 26 confirmed the fire was extinguished and then used a fan to remove the smoke from the building.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station yard maintenance, and performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Crews completed Target Solutions assignments.
Companies rotated through Station 17 for Quarterly EMS Training.
2:53 a.m. – Engine 27, Brush 28, OES4615, and Battalion 5 responded to a vegetation fire on Rodden Road, between Cimarron Trail and Gray Fox Court. B28 arrived on scene to a quarter-acre vegetation fire bumping against an orchard. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire holding it to just over a quarter-acre. Crews remained on scene for roughly 45 minutes for mop up.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 2
MST Companies rotated through Station 17 for the Quarterly EMS Training. The focus of the training was on CPR.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews attended quarterly EMS training.
Personnel completed monthly reports and online training.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station yard maintenance, and performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Crews completed Target Solutions assignments.
Companies rotated through Station 17 for Quarterly EMS Training.
Crews conducted weekly station maintenance at Station 30 in Valley Home.
10:30 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded for an injury vehicle accident at the intersection of Albers and Claribel. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find a two-vehicle accident blocking the roadway. Engine 28 along with Oak Valley Ambulance provided care to two minor patients on scene.
TUESDAY, JULY 1
Battalion 2: Station cleaning and maintenance was conducted at the stations.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 5 attended the monthly All Chief’s meeting.
Engine 28 assisted an Oakdale resident with removing a downed tree branch from her yard. It was cut up, set in the street for Oakdale Public Works to pick up and her yard cleaned up. OPW was notified.
9:57 p.m. – Brush 28, 4617, 4615, Water Tender 27, Grass/Water Tender 23, Battalion 5, and units from Cal Fire TCU responded to Orange Blossom and Morrison for a vegetation fire. First arriving firefighters found 2-3 acres of grass, moderate rate of spread, with fire on both sides of Orange Blossom. Crews began both progressive hose lays and mobile attack. Battalion 5 went into unified command with Cal Fire BC4405. The forward progress of the fire was stopped at just over four acres. No structures were damaged, and crews will be back out to check for hotspots and pull hose. Crews had the opportunity to witness one of the first night flying missions of Cal Fire Copter 601 from Columbia. They were out on a training mission and responded to the incident, providing several drops to slow the fires spread.
