It was a busy time for fundraisers on the Riverbank High School campus over the weekend as students at both ends of the property were working hard for their respective programs.
On Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13, in both the Bruin Gym and the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium, grads of all shapes, sizes, heights and ages gathered to compete in the annual Alumni Basketball Tournament. There were players there who graduated just last year or the year before, as well as some ‘old timers’ from years past.
That’s not to say that the competition level was not intense, because it was. Seemed as if all the players had their eyes on the prize, even though that was just bragging rights until next year’s games. The point of the weekend, besides having fun on the court with some round ball action, was to raise some funds for the current basketball program at the school, helping to defray the costs of uniforms and other team needs. The basketball program’s other fundraising event is held during the school’s Christmas break, featuring a workshop and tournament for middle school players.
At the same time, on the other end of the campus, at least on Saturday morning, the RHS Cheer Squad was busy and was on the job early, washing cars and trucks and any other vehicles that showed up, in a fundraiser of their own as they look to begin a new cheer year when school resumes in August.
Meanwhile, back in the gym, claiming the top honor of this year’s alumni hoops tournament was the team Mo-Show, coming away with the victory in Saturday’s championship game.
