The fearless girls of Riverbank High School’s Powder Puff flag football teams this year broke with a tradition, with the contest actually yielding a winner. For the past three years, fans on both sides have been frustrated to see the games ending in ties.

This year, the senior/frosh squad took advantage of a junior/soph team that just couldn’t seem to get on track. The senior team seemed to have an advantage, too, with many athletes from other sports, volleyball, softball, basketball and track and field, seemingly adapting easily to flag football.

It helped that the seniors had interchangeable quarterbacks, with each switching to pass receiver or backfield when needed. They ended the first quarter up 6-0.

The senior/frosh team brought the scoreboard to 13-0 with about seven minutes remaining in the half, with the score 19-0 at the break.

Halftime saw a routine by the all-boy cheer squad, attempting to stir up the crowd with their dance-like antics, including a few jumps.

Cheerleaders included Nathan Alanis, Andrew Palomino, Ty Luu, Julian Barajas, Victor Rosas, Joel Lizarraga, Daniel Jimenez, Brian Rodriguez and Ozy Zuniga.

At the end of the third quarter, the score had increased to 26-0. A few more TDs in the fourth frame and game finished at 45-0, with the senior/frosh girls on top.

Last year, the Powder Puff game ended in an 8-8 tie. In 2013, the last time there was an actual winner, the junior/soph team won, 31-0.
