Modesto Runner Captures 10K At Riverbank Festival

Michael Leech, 36, of Modesto won the 10K race for Riverbank's Cheese and Wine Exposition in a time of 37:10. He was closely followed at Saturday's event by Michael Dean, 38, of Torrance, who took second place in 38:06. The third place fell to George Palma, 28, of Modesto who recorded a time of 40:11.

Dean said he used to live in Riverbank, ran cross-country for Riverbank High coach Bruce Edwards and graduated from that school in 1988. He flew up from Torrance especially to compete in the Cheese and Wine race.

The top finisher for runners from Riverbank was Christian Hurst, 40, who took 13th place in 44:17. Other Riverbank competitors included Alan Boone in 52nd place, Heather Erhard in 75th, Kenny Erhard in 76th and Annabelle Dosenbach in 91st place.

For the women, Jeni Cohenberg, 25, of Manteca was first in the 10K with a placing of 11th overall and a time of 43:30. Anne Kelley, 49 of Atwater took second place for the women by finishing 12th overall in a time of 43:58. Nineteenth place overall and third for the women fell to Lynsey Jespersen of Ripon in 46:31.

5K results

In the 5K, Raymond Rodriguez, 45, of Los Banos was the overall winner in a time of 17:24, Dustin Espinoza, 15, who listed no city of residence, placed second in 17:52 and Mike Boyer, 39, of Modesto scored third place in 18:05.
