A new event came to downtown Riverbank on Saturday, April 26, with events and activities designed to appeal to area residents of all ages.

The Somar Cultural Music Festival was held at Santa Fe and Third streets from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Plaza del Rio. It was the fourth annual presentation of this event, held this year here in Riverbank.

It was billed as a free, family-friendly activity, with live music, cultural performances, a classic car show, and much more. Booths up and down the streets included vendors of all kinds, from food booths, food trucks, organization informational booths, crafts and commercial booths, and art products. There were booths with games and other activities for youngsters and many more.

The festival is a collaboration between the City of Riverbank Parks and Recreation Department and Somar Youth Project.

According to officials, the Project is a non-profit organization “dedicated to removing barriers and improving access to music and sports for youth in underserved communities. Our mission is to create a network of free and low-cost programs where all children can benefit, regardless of financial circumstances. We believe that music and sports can play a pivotal role in a child’s development and future success.”

The line up of activities provided something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Organizers said the event is designed to celebrate the community and diversity of Riverbank.
