A nighttime crash on Tuesday, April 7 resulted in the death of an elderly pedestrian and the arrest of a Riverbank teenager.

According to the California Highway Patrol, which investigated the incident, the fatal accident occurred on Claribel Road, west of Langworth Road.

Modesto CHP Public Information Officer Aaron Fay said the local office received a call regarding the crash about 9 p.m. on April 7.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located a pedestrian, a 79-year-old female from Modesto, lying on the north shoulder of the roadway, who had been struck by a vehicle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene; the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has identified her as Peggy Jane Holt.

Initial reports placed a white pick-up truck traveling westbound, from the crash scene, just after the crash. Authorities were able to identify a “vehicle of interest,” said Fay, and ultimately took the driver into custody.

Investigators with the CHP Modesto Area Office, with the assistance from CHP ISU and Riverbank PD, located the involved vehicle on Wednesday, April 8 on Pocket Avenue in Riverbank. It was recovered and taken for evidence. Subsequently, officers arrested Eduardo Diaz, 19, of Riverbank; he was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for felony hit and run.

The crash remains under investigation.
