While a Spring Break tennis camp was being hosted for youngsters interested in learning about the game, members of the Riverbank High School tennis team were also busy during their week off from school.

The Bruins defeated Linden and Summerville this past week.

On Tuesday, April 7 the tennis team won 9-0 against Linden.

“Thursday, we played Summerville at home and won 6-3 after having lost to them at Summerville two weeks ago in a tight match 4-5,” said head coach Bruce Edwards.

He said on the trip to Summerville, the Bruin bus arrived late. As a result, the team had very little time to warm up and fell behind early; this time they were winners over the Bears in Mother Lode League action.

“Our girls are our strength on the team with wins in each of the five matches they played,” Edwards said.

Number one girls singles player Nathalie Garcia and number two Emily Ramirez are both now 9-0 in league.

Number one girls doubles, Ava Maez and Isa Fernandez, are 9-0.

Number two girls doubles, Dana Garcia with different partners Noemy Torres and Esmeralda Gomez, are 8-1.

Several players rotate in to the mixed doubles and they are also 9-0.

“Boys Felix Pasillas, Jeancarlo Torres, Eduardo De La Santos and girls Valeria Aguilar, Lydia Rands, Noemy Torres and Alexa Rojas play mixed doubles,” noted Edwards.

For the Bruin boys, Edwards said the number two doubles are getting stronger.

“They had their first win against Summerville (6-3, 6-3) having lost three times previously with various combinations of doubles partners,” the coach explained. “Mateo Ibarra and Jeancarlo Torres seem to have figured out how to work together and play smart.”

Number one boys singles player Victor Jacobo has had strong matches against players that beat him easily last season from Summerville and Bret Harte, Edwards said, taking them often to tie-breakers.

The Bruins will host Calaveras on Thursday and Bret Harte in a make up match on Friday, with the contests scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
