Join In - Weekend Events Benefit Land, Animals

A pair of events slated for Saturday in the local area will hopefully go a long way toward helping animals and the environment they live in.

First, Riverbank resident are invited to join in the annual Stanislaus River Clean Up Day on Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon. Sites slated for clean-up include Jacob Myers Park near Riverbank and the Stanislaus River at Oakdale Shopping Center, in addition to Caswell State Park and Oak Grove Park, both near Ripon.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participant and should bring water, sunscreen, work gloves, wear old shoes and have fun.

There will be a barbeque and awards ceremony after the cleanup, hosted at Jacob Myers Park in Riverbank. Prizes will also be awarded for the most trash picked up, most unusual trash item, best trash sculpture, biggest trash item and heaviest trash item.

Event sponsors for the annual clean up include the East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District, with trash hauling provided by Gilton Solid Waste Management. The barbeque is being put on by Oakdale Lion's Club and Oakdale Irrigation District and prizes are provided through REI and Stanislaus County Fish and Wildlife Committee.
