Teen Accident Victim Remembered At Vigil

Mourners gathered at an early evening vigil on Wednesday night in Riverbank, the city’s Silva Park the scene for the remembrance of accident victim Bruno Diaz. The teen was riding a bicycle early morning July 8 on Terminal Avenue when he was struck from behind by a Jeep. The accident occurred near Plainview Road at about 4:30 a.m.

Diaz, whose birthday was July 8, had just turned 17. He was going to be a junior at Enochs High School in the fall. He was remembered by about 100 people at the July 10 vigil, with the gathering referred to as a celebration of his life by his mother. Some family members addressed those at the gathering, sharing their memories with the crowd.

The 21-year-old driver, also from Riverbank, did not have time to avoid striking Diaz when he came upon him in the roadway, according to the CHP report. It was dark and the bike Diaz was riding did not have lights and he was not wearing reflective clothing. The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities; no citations have been issued.
