A local muralist, Alexandra Riddle, has begun work on another project in downtown Riverbank.
In October, the Riverbank Historical Society board voted to approve the design and funding of the work, which will honor and commemorate the Del Rio Theatre, a long-standing landmark that was at the corner of Third and Atchison streets. It was demolished back in July, and at present, the property remains empty.
The mural is being painted on the two-story alley end (east) wall of the bank/apartment building on the corner of Third and Santa Fe streets. Riddle’s work began last week, using a paint sprayer and a hydraulic lift to reach the heights. According to Society officials, the $10,000 mural painting has been funded by a grant from the city.
Riddle is no stranger to murals in Riverbank. She has created four others within the four blocks of where she’s working now.
The first was the Plaza del Rio mural along the wall of the Farmers Insurance office bordering the park, completed when the park first opened. The most recent is also in the Plaza del Rio Park, the Centennial Mural painted on the back wall of the stage there, in June of 2022.
She has also designed and painted the Sister Cities Mural, on the south end of City Hall North, and a Firefighters Mural on the wall at the corner of Third and Topeka streets, just down from Station 26 of the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department there.
She also painted the baseball murals on the walls of the snack bar at Castleberg Park.
Riddle was working long hours last week, and had progressed well by last weekend, hoping to finish ahead of the forecast rain storms coming this week.
