Allen Clement Holbrook, 98, died Tuesday, Oct. 16 at his residence at Casa de Modesto in Modesto.

Mr. Holbrook was a native of Hemet, and moved to Riverbank in 1913. He attended Riverbank Grammar School and Oakdale High School, where he graduated in 1927. In high school he was a standout athlete, lettering in basketball, baseball and football.

He was retired from the Oakdale Irrigation District where he was water superintendent and was instrumental in locating the dam sites for the Tri Dam Project.

He and his late wife were partners in the Holbrook's Fabrics and Linens store in Riverbank.

He had a lifelong connection with Boy Scouting. He was the first Eagle Scout in Riverbank, served many years as a Scout leader in both Riverbank and Oakdale, and was on the Executive Board of the Yosemite Area Council, BSA for over 30 years. In honor of his service, he had been awarded the Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts of America. Until his passing, Mr. Holbrook was recognized as the oldest living Eagle Scout in the Greater Yosemite Council, BSA.

He had a long tenure with the Masonic Order and had served as Master of Riverbank Lodge 459, F&AM twice, once in 1945 and again in 1987. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and had been presented the Hiram Award from that body in 1984. He was a member of Escalon Shrine and the Stockton Scottish Rite. He was an avid golfer and had served as President of the Oakdale Golf and Country Club. He was a long-time member of the Oakdale United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his son, Allen H. (Evelyn) Holbrook; and daughter, Barbara A. (Rod) Mortensen, both of Modesto; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Frances Johnson Holbrook; one grandson; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson. Interment to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
