Jose Leonel Salazar, 81, of Riverbank died of heart failure in his sleep on Saturday, April 21at his Riverbank home with his family.

He was born in McAllen, Texas on March 9, 1931 and was the son of Carlos Salazar and Julia Garza.

Mr. Salazar proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Shortly after serving he married his first wife Virginia Fonseca, in 1953, in McAllen, Texas and they had four children together. In 1977, he married his second wife, Luisa Garcia, in Riverbank and they had three children together.

He is survived by his wife, Luisa; his daughter, Connie (Fred); sons, Jose Leonel Junior (Marie), Carlos (Haley), Jesus (Rogelia), Victor, Robert, Juan (Norma); sisters, Ruth and Elva; brother, Lupe; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one grandchild.

A rosary was held April 30 at St. Frances of Rome Church, Riverbank. A mass service was held May 1, also at St. Frances of Rome. A burial service will be at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.
