Prices skyrocket at region’s gas pumps

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 35.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.25/gallon as of Monday, April 8, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 61.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 69.0 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 3.1 cents in the last week and stands at $4.02 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.79/gallon while the most expensive was $5.79, a difference of 100.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state was $4.34/gallon while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $2.45/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 6.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.57/gallon on April 8. The national average is up 17.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 0.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.20/gallon, up 26.1 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.93; Oakland - $5.43, up 32.5 cents from last week’s $5.10; and San Jose - $5.40, up 31.1 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.09/gallon.

“After a brief break, gas prices have leapt back up, driven by extensive refinery maintenance on the West Coast, where prices have increased notably; only a handful of states have seen prices decline over the last week,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The West Coast is likely to see gas prices continue to jump, and in a week or so, will be joined by the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states as they wrap up the transition to summer gasoline.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest local price of $5.44 recorded on April 8, 2022 while the highest U.S. price was $4.12, also in 2022. Lowest price in Modesto was $2.60 per gallon on April 8, 2016; lowest U.S. price was $1.88 per gallon on April 8, 2020.
