Students and faculty members of Riverbank Unified School District will be joined by community members as well as design and construction professionals to celebrate the grand opening of the state-of-the-art gymnasium at Riverbank High School. The ceremony is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 4 p.m. at the school located at 6200 Claus Road in Riverbank.

"This gymnasium opening is the result of the Riverbank community's strong commitment to our students and schools. This gym has been a goal for our district for many years, and we finally have a gymnasium that our students and community can be proud of," said Riverbank Unified School District Superintendent Ken Geisick.

Riverbank High School is the only high school in Riverbank and has had a need for major improvements in its gymnasium and locker facilities for over 30 years. As the school board decided to address this shortcoming, the community supported the idea with the passage of a local bond to help fund the construction of the new gymnasium. The building includes a large gymnasium, locker and shower facilities, team rooms, an athletic training room, coach's offices, and a grand entry lobby with spectator amenities.

"We were extremely pleased with the overall design and functionality of this facility," said Antonio Avila, project architect of Darden Architects, Inc. "This gymnasium will offer better opportunities to the students in Riverbank, as well as provide pride and enjoyment to its spectators."

The gymnasium itself was awarded a prestigious design award recently at the Leroy F. Greene Design and Planning Awards Program. Riverbank Unified School District representatives, along with designer Darden Architects, accepted the award on Feb. 25 in Sacramento. The building successfully addresses the School Board's stated goal of creating a building that will effectively make a strong improvement in the physical education and athletic offerings on campus, and be a symbol of pride in the high school and the community it serves.
