SOLEMN CEREMONY
FLAG RETIRE
Ric McGinnis/The News

Members of Oakdale Boy Scout Troop 365 participate in a Flag Retirement Ceremony at American Veterans First headquarters on Oakdale Road in Riverbank. The event was organized by the veterans group in memory of Marine Corporal Michael D. Anderson Junior, of Modesto. CPL Anderson was killed in combat action in December of 2004 in Fallujah, Iraq. He was 21 years old. The scouts held the ceremony, disposing of the flag of the United States properly, with a solemn ritual that includes the burning of the retired flags. One – not retired – was also presented to a local veteran after being properly folded.
