Dear Editor,
I support Sheriff Adam Christianson on his stand against further gun control legislation. I applaud his recent letter to Vice President Joe Biden. I have sent the Sheriff the following letter.
Dear Sheriff Christianson:
I was extremely pleased to read your January 16, 2013 letter to Vice President Joe Biden on the issue of gun control legislation. I agree with everything stated in your letter, and your conclusion that citizens should not be made to suffer further legislative infringements on the 2nd amendment. Your letter was an important policy statement and reminder that, as County Sheriff, you recognize that your duty is to the people. You stated that “As the elected Sheriff of Stanislaus County, I recognize the primary responsibility of law enforcement is to protect the citizens and preserve individual rights and freedoms. Individual rights and freedoms as provided for by the Constitution of the United States should never be threatened or compromised.” Well said.
You further eloquently explained in your letter that “I refuse to take firearms from law abiding citizens and will not turn law abiding citizens into criminals by enforcing useless gun control legislation.” Sheriff, I believe that you understand, as I do, that in most circumstances, the first line of defense against violent criminals is yourself. Each individual has a natural right and obligation to defend themselves with reasonable force against violent criminal attack. As the saying goes “when seconds count, the police are minutes away.” You have also been thoughtful and responsive to the needs of your community regarding CCW issuance; assisting the residents of Stanislaus County to have a practical means of self-defense.
I applaud your letter and the stand you have taken on behalf of the good citizens you have sworn to protect. You have been a great sheriff, and I will be extremely happy to support you for another term when the time comes to do so. Bravo, sir!
Robert J. Winston,
Attorney at Law
