As the spring softball campaign winds down, the Riverbank varsity Lady Bruins put together a strong effort in their May 4 game against Big Valley Christian, coming away with a decisive 10-1 victory.

Played on the RHS campus, the home team never trailed, as they got a run in the first, then two in the third to go up 3-0. The visiting Big Valley Christian Lady Lions scored a run in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 3-1, but Riverbank roared back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a commanding 7-1 lead. They would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and easily earned the Mother Lode Leage win.

Riverbank had 10 runs on 12 hits; Big Valley had one run on four hits.

Leading the way offensively for Riverbank were senior Maya Guzman, 4-for-4 with a double, triple and four runs scored; sophomore Briseida Felix, 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI; while senior Jimena Gomez, sophomore Arizona Navarro, freshman Janelle Montoya and seniors Peyton Shrider and Cristal Paloma each had an RBI as well. Montoya scored two runs.

Guzman had five stolen bases on the afternoon, Montoya and Shrider each had one.

Senior Guzman was the winning pitcher for Riverbank, striking out 17 and allowing just four hits and one earned run in her seven innings of work.

The team is scheduled to close out the Mother Lode League season on the road, as they head to Summerville for a Thursday, May 7 contest.

BASEBALL

On the road on April 28 and then back at home on April 30, the varsity Bruin baseball team dropped their final two Mother Lode League contests.

Runs have been hard to come by for the team and that streak continued, as they lost an 18-1 decision at Calaveras on Tuesday, April 28. In the regular season finale, hosting Linden on Thursday, April 30, the Bruins were outscored by a 16-2 margin.

The Bruins had just a few hits against Calaveras, with senior Isaiah Deras collecting two; he also scored the team’s lone run. Santos Acuna had a hit as well, driving in the Riverbank run.

Against Linden, the Bruins had four hits; Deras had two, including a double, while Cody Martin and Acuna had one each. Deras also scored both runs for the Bruins in their final game of the season.

TRACK/FIELD

The postseason is underway for the Bruin track and field athletes. Coach Sam Gong said the team will compete at the Mother Lode League championship trials on May 6 followed by the finals on Friday, May 8, being hosted at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.
