Practice for some fall sports began on Monday this week, with girls hoping to make the volleyball teams this season turning out for their first day of practice on Aug. 1. Classes on the high school campus resume Thursday, Aug. 4.
Lady Bruin volleyball began practices in the Bruin Gym, after first taking about an hour to get the necessary paperwork in order, according to Varsity Coach John Bartlett.
He said it always takes some time to get going, but the permissions and physical forms have to be in place before the girls can start. It’s pretty much the case for all high school sports programs.
Once underway, the volleyball hopefuls began by running some laps around the inside of the gym, then concentrating on stretching and loosening up exercises.
After that, the girls broke up into two groups, one working with Bartlett, the varsity girls, while the younger players started working with JV Coach Paola Reyes and Frosh Coach Mikayla Macias, both RHS volleyball alumni.
The varsity team will have three weeks to prepare until it faces its first preseason competition on Saturday, Aug. 20 in Newman, at the Orestimba High Tournament. They play first at home on Monday, Aug. 22, in the Foundation Game, against Johansen High School of Modesto.
The JV and Frosh will see their first action on Aug. 23, when Central Valley High School of Ceres comes to town.
Meanwhile, Bruin football players continue to work out, ahead of their first contest, a scrimmage against Millennium High School of Tracy, on the home field on Friday Aug. 19.
Lady Bruin Golf hosts its first match on Tuesday, Aug. 23, against Gustine, at the Escalon Golf Course.
Co-Ed Cross Country runners see their first competition at a scrimmage run at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
