An injury has held Riverbank High graduate German Fernandez from recent NCAA track and field competition with Oklahoma State University, but the U.S. Junior Mile record holder is nowhere near the end of his career.

Fernandez opened the season with a NCAA Championship qualifying time in the 3,000-meter run at the Husky Classic (Seattle, WA) early this year. Fernandez was third in the event, one of his only runs of the season.

He also competed in the Big-12 Indoor championships, where a speedy 4 minute, 6.44 second mile qualified him fifth to the second day - though he did not finish the competition.

Fernandez was named to the Bowerman Award Preseason watch list for 2010 after a thrilling freshman season that saw an NCAA Championship in both the outdoor 1,500 and the indoor 3,000.

The Bruin alumnus won four Big-12 titles during last year's track season and was prepping for a run at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan this year.

The Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club recently named Fernandez the men's open division sportsman of the year. The honor followed a countless string of successful races that led Fernandez to huge honors in his initial college season.

Fernandez is the OSU school record holder in the mile, the 3,000 and 5,000. His personal bests are 3:39 (1,500), 3:55.02 (mile), 7:47.97 (3,000), 8:34.23 (3,200), and 13:25.46 (5,000).

He was the 2008 Big 12 Cross Country Newcomer of the Year, a 2009 USA Track and Field Junior Cross Country National Champion, the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Outstanding Performer of the Year, the 2009 USTFCCCA Midwest Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Outstanding Performer of the Year and named the 2009 Oklahoma State Athlete of the Year by Go Pokes Magazine.

Fernandez and Oklahoma State will take on the 2010 Big 12 outdoor championships in Columbia, MO, on May 14. The NCAA outdoor championships are in Texas on May 27.
