Riverbank High senior German Fernandez seems to be poised to cement his name as the best distance runner from the area as the 17-year-old standout stood out against some of the nation's most elite competition during his victory in the USA Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay in San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Fernandez outran a field of nearly 100 of his peers to earn a berth in the IAAF World Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland at the end of March. The Riverbank star outdueled Ryan Sheridan of Iona College by one second, winning with a time of 24:18 in the 8-kilometer race.

Emil Heineking of the University of Virginia finished the race 16 seconds off the lead to round out the top three. Fernandez was one of just two 17-year-olds to finish the event in the top 20.

Fernandez' trip to Scotland will put the runner against some of the premier junior men's competition in the entire world.
