Home Run Sparks Bruin Baseball Victory
COTA
RHS pitcher Roman Cota (10) fires from the mound to notch Riverbanks 6-3 win against the Mustangs of Mountain House on the home field on Tuesday, April 12. The win was locked in by a three-run homer in the fifth inning by battery mate, catcher Fabian Verdin. Ric McGinnis/The News

Trans-Valley League sports are in full swing, with baseball, softball, tennis and soccer teams all competing for Riverbank this past week. Here is a brief recap of the action.

BASEBALL

For the Bruin varsity baseball team, the week brought a split of the home and away pair of games against the Mountain House Mustangs. First, it was the Bruins winning with a three-run home run, 6-3, on Tuesday, April 12, on their home field. Catcher Fabian Verdin knocked the ball over the left field fence in the fifth inning with two men on base. Unfortunately, RHS dropped the Thursday game at Mountain House, 15-1.

The JV Bruins lost the pair of games, 13-3 and then in a much closer 11-10 decision, falling just short.

This week, baseball teams were to travel to Hughson on Tuesday, then return home hosting Hughson tomorrow, Thursday, April 21.

SOFTBALL

The softball diamond on the RHS campus saw the girls hosting Ripon on Thursday, April 13, but they suffered a shutout, losing 8-0. They’re scheduled to travel to Hughson today, Wednesday, April 20, and will host Hilmar on Friday, April 22.

SOCCER

The Lady Bruins lost a pair of soccer matches in TVL play this past week. On the road, they lost to Modesto Christian High School, 7-0, on Tuesday, April 12, then came home to lose to Hilmar 7-1, on Thursday, April 14.

The JV Lady Bruins came out on top of Hilmar, 5-2, in their only match of the week. MC does not field a JV team.

TENNIS

The Bruins captured a thrilling 5-4 win over rival Escalon on the Cougars’ home court in the Tuesday, April 12 match.

Winners for Riverbank included boys singles Alex Alfaro and Nathaniel Martinez, boys doubles Eliseo Gonzalez and Josh Felix, Martin Baltazar and Luis De Los Santos, along with the mixed doubles team of Rigo Garcia and Brooke Rodriguez.

RHS was to host Mountain House yesterday, Tuesday, April 19 after The News went to press. It will be their only match of the week, as Modesto Christian – originally their scheduled Thursday opponent – does not have a tennis team this year.
