After a dormant offensive season from Riverbank High forwards that saw just four goals in their first eight games, Lady Bruin varsity soccer players erupted for six goals in 40 minutes, and touched up host Orestimba for a 7-1 victory last week.

The Bruins led just 1-0 at the half on March 22, but got a huge offensive push when Bruin coach Martin Gonzales moved senior defender, Kaitlynn Deabenderfer, to the front lines.

Deabenderfer responded with three scores, and assisted on one more before Gonzales could move her back to her defensive post.

The momentum kept going as Andrea Harvey tacked on two goals and Erika Cisneros (assist) also found the net. Ruby Albor dished out a second half assist, and gave Riverbank the lead with the only goal of the opening half. Celina Lopez assisted on a score as well, and freshman goalkeeper Martha Anguniga landed five saves in the wining effort for Riverbank.

"We broke out in that game," Gonzales said. "I have been telling them they have it in them a long time ago, but in this game they believed they could score."

With most Trans-Valley League teams struggling to gain distance from a very tight pack, Riverbank takes a quick look at first place in the league standings at 2-1. They are in the playoff hunt with Escalon, Ripon, Hilmar and Hughson, all who muddled their success with ties and wins at the TVL start.

Ripon beat Escalon, but tied Hilmar. Hughson and Hilmar topped the likes of Orestimba and Modesto Christian, but tied each other. Escalon beat Riverbank, but saw one of just two Ripon shots on goal result in their 1-0 defeat.

Riverbank has some tough games ahead with their four toughest opponents scheduled in their next five contests, but can stay in the top tier with timely goals and tough defensive play.

"Our win over Orestimba brings to life the fact that we have good chances to do something this year," Gonzales said. "This girls' team has never been to playoffs, but we are riding that line of being a really strong team."

The Bruins have a key TVL contest at Ripon on Thursday, March 31, at Park View Elementary. They host Hughson in another big game on April 5.
