The talents of senior transfer Marissa McDuffy will likely lead Gregori High's girls basketball team to historic program achievements in its second season at the varsity level.

On Nov. 30, she lifted the program to a tournament title with 38 points as Gregori eased past Riverbank 55-38 in the championship game of the 36th annual Escalon Lions Club Invitational.

McDuffy was a menace across the floor with spectacular play in the same title game that Riverbank won a year ago.

"We chased her around the court all night," Riverbank coach Tim Carnes said. "Only when we put our defensive specialist Amy McDonald on her were we able to slow her down...a little."

The Lady Bruins reached the title game by besting Central Catholic 44-27 in the tourney semifinals. Janelle Luu had 17 points in the win while Olivia Luu added 14, Vanessa Vargas nine and Chloe Arnold four.

Janelle had scored 21 in the previous game against Bear River, when Riverbank won 48-30. Olivia added 15 while Kendra Garcia (four), Raine Gallagher (three), Vargas (two), McDonald (two) and Toni Adams (one) chipped in.

Both of the Luu sisters were named to the All-Tournament team.

The varsity girls entered the tournament on the momentum of a 42-31 win over Division I Golden Valley of the Central California Conference. Olivia scored 18 points in the win while Janelle added 13. Vargas (six), Adams (four) and Garcia (one) also scored.

Riverbank begins action in the McNair Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 6.
