Riverbank’s co-ed tennis team finished its regular season this past week, wrapping up TVL action with an undefeated record. Most of the boys team and several players on the girls team were named to the all-league roster over the weekend as well.
Bruin tennis closed out its regular season on the road at Hughson on Tuesday, April 26, with a big win. It left the team with an undefeated record, leading up to the Trans-Valley League qualifying tournament on Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30.
Before the tournament got underway, league awards were announced, with many of the Bruins selected by coaches as members of the all-league team.
Coach Bruce Edwards said the boys team had the most voted to the team in the TVL ever.
Selected Riverbank boys included: Nathaniel Martinez, Alex Alfaro, Eliseo Gonzalez, Josh Felix, Martin Baltazar, Rigo Garcia, and Luis De Los Santos; all the boys who played for the Bruins.
The girls team members selected included Jessica Vasquez, Cammi Mauchley, and Brooke Rodriguez.
He said all the boys went undefeated except for Alex Alfaro, who split just one time. Brooke Rodriguez also went undefeated.
During the league tournament, in the number one girls doubles eliminations, Xena Barnwell and Carla Ibarra were eliminated in the first round. In girls number 2, the pair of Jasmine Rubio and Jackie Pantoja won in the quarterfinals but were defeated 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.
In boys number one doubles, Andrew Rodriguez and Josh Felix won their semifinal match, defeating Escalon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, and for the final win defeated Hughson, 6-4, 7-6.
In boys number 2 doubles rounds, Martin Baltazar and Luis De Los Santos won their semifinal 6-4, 6-4, and their final, 6-3, 6-0, over Escalon and will go on to sections.
In the mixed doubles competition, the Bruin team was defeated in quarterfinals.
Along with a winning, undefeated tennis season in league play, Riverbank’s Bruce Edwards was named Coach of the Year by the Trans-Valley League
The weekend tournament helped determine which TVL players would go on to play in the qualifying rounds leading up to the section tournament, then, if successful, up to the Sac Joaquin Section Tournament.
