With classes for Riverbank schools ending last week, along with graduations around the area, there were only a couple of high school sports contests to be had recently, with just one at home, and that was on Friday.

Riverbank High School varsity boys soccer hosted neighboring Escalon, facing the Cougars on the home pitch on May 28. The match was tied, 1-1, at the midpoint, but, as a result of two late match penalty kicks converted by the Cougars, the Bruins fell, 3-2.

The high school graduation took place on Thursday, so Friday’s game did not interfere with any commencement ceremonies. It was a game added to the schedule, by mutual agreement of the coaches, as the schools would normally play each other in the Trans-Valley League. Due to the pandemic, Escalon was moved in to the Valley Oak League for this season but did want to play their TVL rival, getting in the contest.

Riverbank was scheduled to host Waterford on June 1, and Orestimba is on the schedule for Thursday, June 3. If things stay on track, they’ll travel to Mariposa next week, then finish the season on Thursday, June 10, hosting Hughson.

Girls Soccer

The Lady Bruin soccer team was to play at Waterford on Tuesday, and travel to Orestimba for a Thursday, June 3 contest. They finish up next week at home on June 8 as they host Waterford, then go to Hughson on June 10 to end their season.

Basketball Teams

Traveling to nearby Escalon for a Tuesday, May 25 contest, the Bruin boys fell by a 62-50 final to their longtime Trans-Valley League rival. Escalon is playing this season in the Valley Oak League but the schools kept their friendly rivalry intact by finding an opportunity to fit in a game, though this time it was a non-league tilt. Bruin boys basketball resumes on Friday, June 4, the varsity squad welcoming Orestimba. The final week’s schedule sees them heading to Mariposa on June 9, then hosting the final game on Friday, June 11, against Hughson.

Lady Bruin basketball is to travel to Waterford on June 2, then go to Orestimba on Friday, June 4. Next week, they host Mariposa on Wednesday, June 9, then finish up in Hughson, ending their season against the Lady Huskies on June 11 with a 7 p.m. tip off time.

Recent action saw the varsity hoop girls defeating Denair, 44-15, in a May 21 contest.

It was the battle of the number 13’s at this point in the second half as Riverbank’s Alan Gonzalez, in grey, fights off an Escalon opponent in varsity boys soccer on the home field last Friday, May 28. The Bruins fell 3-2 to the Cougars after all was said and done. Ric McGinnis/The News
