Consider some unique additions to home parties
Home party
There’s no shortage of fun ways to make a party at home stand out as a truly unique and festive night.

Hosting a get-together at home is a fun way to spend some time with loved ones. Though the basics of food, drinks and entertainment are all a party really needs to get going, it also can be fun to explore ways to set a get-together apart from past gatherings.

Hosting at home has become a go-to option when looking to spend time with family and friends. While a night out on the town still has its appeal, more and more people prefer to host at home. A 2025 survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Air Wick found that more than seven in 10 respondents prefer staying in over going out, with nearly half of those in favor of staying in indicating they only recently shifted to hosting at home over heading out on the town. Hosts who prefer welcoming friends and family into their homes can consider these unique additions to home parties that can make such celebrations stand out.

Virtual reality area: Virtual reality is increasingly being utilized in public spaces, including museums, to make local attractions more interactive and engaging. So why not embrace that trend when hosting at home? Designate a room or corner of a large, open entertaining space as a virtual reality zone. Offer a headset and a range of experiences guests can enjoy. Just be sure to designate one of the hosts or a guest as a monitor, as some people can lose their bearings or get a little overexcited or anxious when wearing a VR headset.

Silent disco: Silent discos made a big splash in the early years of the twentieth century at the music festival Bonnaroo, itself now a cultural phenomenon. Hosts can bring a touch of that beloved festival’s history into their own homes by designating a portion of their festivities as a silent disco time. During a silent disco, guests let loose on the dance floor but keep the noise down, as the music is listened to via a set of wireless headphones donned by each participating dancer.

“Murder” mystery: Hosts really looking for a change of pace can make their next party a murder mystery dinner. Pick a theme and encourage guests to dress up in costume. A host or enthusiastic guest can play the victim. Assign guests roles upon their arrival and encourage everyone to remain in character until the whodunnit is solved. Reward the first to solve the mystery with a prize.

Story time: If hosts and their friends are a literary lot, then turn the party into a chance to collaborate on a story. Hosts can get the ball rolling by writing the opening sentence(s), and then pass the baton, or pen, to the next guest. Consider the season when starting the story. A scary story is ideal around Halloween, while a mystery might make the ideal genre to explore if the weather outside is a little dark and dreary.
