The ability to speak multiple languages is a very beneficial skill to have in the melting pot that we call America, along with the ability to read and write. There are several students that received a Certificate of Achievement from the Riverbank Unified School District for receiving the Seal of Multilingual Proficiency, which was awarded at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto.

Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) recognizes students that are proficient in English and one other world language by high school graduation with the award, which will appear on the transcript of the graduating senior. This seal is another added accomplishment for students to put on their résumés for potential employers and colleges.

The following students were honored at last week’s school board meeting: Anettee Arias Zamudio, Adrián Benítez, Héctor Calderón Jr., Patricia Elizondo Arteaga, Rigoberto García Salazar, Kimberlin Michelle León-Cortes, Mitzi A. Manzo, Ashley Murillo, Dulce Piceno Avila, Andrea Piñón, Francisco Pizarro, Jacqueline Rodríguez, Jorge Rubio, and Sara Tapia.

“We had 14 students this year that qualified,” stated Christine Facella, RUSD Assistant Superintendent. “This is a rigorous process which they have to prove that they are bilingual in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as have academic success.

“This is really a difficult achievement.”

According to Facella, Stanislaus County has a more scrupulous program than the state program.

“These are the students that we need in the future that are going to lead our nation and our state through the very interesting and rewarding times throughout the 21st century,” said Daryl Camp, RUSD Superintendent. “Thank you also to your parents. We appreciate all you do to promote multilinguism.”
