Stan. Co. Sheriffs

Riverbank Police Services Deputies are investigating a number of incidents, including a weekend fatality involving a pedestrian.

Police Chief Erin Kiely said on Saturday, Jan. 28 at about 6:50 p.m., Riverbank Police Services Deputies were dispatched to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian on Patterson Road, west of Oakdale Road, in Riverbank. When deputies arrived they found an elderly man with injuries and he was transported to the emergency room where he later died. The Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team responded to investigate the fatality.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the elderly man was walking eastbound on Patterson Road wearing dark clothing when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. The victim was identified as Carlos Mario-Rosas Hernandez, 71, of Riverbank. The driver of the vehicle was not arrested in the investigation.

In other recent cases, authorities said they received a report of an SUV taken from in front of a residence in the 3700 block of Patterson Road shortly before 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28.

“The owner had left the keys in the vehicle with the engine idling before going to work,” Kiely explained. “The unknown suspect crashed through a pasture fence near Claus and California. Four horses escaped through the damaged pasture fence. The suspect was able to escape the area before deputies arrived. The vehicle was returned to its owner and the horses were captured.”

And in a case from last week, RPS deputies responded to El Sumeri Market at 6132 Terminal Ave. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at about 5 p.m. for a report of a woman on the ground in front of the business. When deputies arrived they found a 39 year-old woman lying on the ground with multiple injuries. She was transported to the emergency room for treatment.

The victim told deputies that a subject known to her as 23 year-old Miguel Angel Soria Jr., of Ceres kidnapped her from in front of a residence in Ceres. The suspect threatened her with a weapon and sexually assaulted her before driving her to the El Sumeri Market in Riverbank. The victim was able to get out of the suspect’s vehicle at the market and tried to escape. Soria Jr. reportedly struck the victim with his car and then fled the area.

On Friday, Jan. 27 at 12:05 p.m., Modesto Police Department officers found Soria Jr. driving his car on East Briggsmore Avenue in Modesto at a high rate of speed. They followed him to Terminal Avenue and Plainview Road in Riverbank where they made a traffic stop and arrested the suspect.

Soria Jr. was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, sexual assault and kidnaping.
