Denizens of dark and dreary places will be converging on Jacob Myers Park this weekend, all the better to scare you.

Or not.

The two-day event – the annual Halloween Haunted Hayride – is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The scare-fest is sponsored by the City Parks and Recreation Department and includes scenes scattered throughout the upper park area. Volunteers from local schools and community groups work together to put on the event each year, putting together a number of ‘scare sites’ for the enjoyment of visitors.

Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages four to 12. Those under three years old must sit on a lap; some sites may also be too ghoulishly realistic for the youngest attendees.

Patrons usually park in the western lot, nearest the bridge, and trailers pulled through the course provide a vantage point for observers of the frightfulness in the dark.

Scary sights and sounds, screams, and plenty of moans and groans are promised.

Officials said only the ‘bravest’ will survive this scary event, but it is expected to be fun for the entire family.

Participants spend several weeks prior to the event getting their sites planned and also agree to staff the location for both nights of the hayride.
