Similar to the topping off of a building under construction, the massive 10-by-50-foot IMAX sign was installed, hooked up and lit this past week, putting an exclamation point on the opening of the new three-story auditorium.

The completion brings to 13 the number of movie screens at the Galaxy Luxury+ Theatre complex on Patterson Road.

Although a week late, the new sign beams its iconic light out over the western parking lot at the multiplex.

Despite original difficulties with the size of the sign earlier, an appearance before the planning commission and then the city council resulted in Galaxy receiving a variance for a larger installation than the original plans called for. Installers had placed wiring and mounts for the larger sign than the original permit had allowed.

Then there was a mix up at the factory, causing a delay in delivery of the sign pieces.

Last week, Viking Sign Installation, a Manteca company, began the step by step task of lifting the letters, one by one, and attaching them to the wall. Then power was wired in, the letters recovered and the power switched on.

The opening of the Galaxy Luxury+ 3D IMAX coincided with the debut of the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice across the country.
