The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Oct. 21 through Monday, Oct. 27. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, OCT. 27
Battalion 2: Crews trained with our newest members in preparation for upcoming testing as well as getting some sign offs done.
Stanislaus crews provided public education events both at elementary schools and firehouses.
Battalion 5: Crews in Battalion 5 conducted Monday apparatus checks on all assigned equipment and conducted station maintenance.
SUNDAY, OCT. 26
Battalion 2: Crews trained with our newest members in preparation for upcoming testing as well as getting some sign offs done.
Battalion 5: Crews in Battalion 5 conducted hydrant maintenance throughout the area to ensure that when needed most, during a fire, that they are working properly, flow the correct amount of water and are free and clear of any debris or vegetation that could hinder the operation during an emergency.
SATURDAY, OCT. 25
Battalion 2: 11:33 a.m. – Engines 1, 3, 9, 19, 21, Quint 22, Battalions 2, 3, and Medic 1 responded to a residential structure fire on the 2800 block of Bateman Lane. Engine 3 was first on scene and observed heavy fire coming from the C side of a single-story residence, prompting an immediate request for a second alarm. Second-alarm units included Engines 2 and 15 and Truck 1.
The fire extended to trees in the backyard, posing a threat to two adjacent residences and another property located on Mission Bell. Embers were reported as far south as Yosemite Boulevard. Crews deployed three attack lines to contain the fire. One home sustained significant damage, while two others incurred minor damage.
MPD Sky 1 provided aerial support, utilizing a thermal camera to search for embers south of the incident; none were detected. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupants of the affected home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Engines 23, 26, and Quint 22 participated in Saturday drills. They performed stairwell evolutions at the RFTC and vented from the tip of the ladder at Tower 17.
Battalion 5: Engine 29, Fire Chief Wise and Deputy Chief Bray attended the Valley Home Fall Festival.
The East Stanislaus Fire Safe Council, partnering with the Modesto Fire Department held a trash collection day in Knights Ferry. This event was for community members in the Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home area to dispose of unwanted trash thus limiting fire danger.
4:27 p.m. – Engine 28 responded to a vehicle fire on Lon Dale Road in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to find the vehicle well involved. The fire was extinguished in a few minutes and Engine 28 remained on scene until CHP showed up at the location.
FRIDAY, OCT. 24
Battalion 5: Companies rotated through the RFTC for Annual Physical Blood Draws.
Engines 27, 28, 29, BC5 and Chief Officers along with Oakdale PD, Modesto PD, and Oak Valley Ambulance attended a First Responder Appreciation Luncheon hosted by Steves Chevrolet in Oakdale.
Engine 27 conducted ladder drills.
THURSDAY, OCT. 23
Captain Job Juarez and Engineer Salazar attended USAR HazMat certification training in Menlo Park over the last couple of days.
MFD personnel assisted MPD with an active shooter tabletop training with Beyer High School staff.
Battalion 2: Engine 26 took part in a Fire Prevention Assembly at Crossroads Elementary School in Riverbank. The crew, accompanied by Inspector Sansing, demonstrated stop, drop, and roll techniques, emphasized the importance of smoke detectors, and discussed the necessity of maintaining an emergency exit plan.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Firefighters completed mandated Target Solutions assignments.
Companies rotated through blood draws for their annual Department physicals.
MFD Chiefs 1, 2, 8, Engine 7 and Battalion 5 attended the awards ceremony for SR911 Dispatch Manager Juana Carrasco who was awarded First Responder of the Year by the California State Assembly.
Engine 9 and Engine 28 trained with the MFD Explorers on wildland fire suppression and orientation on Brush 28.
2:22 p.m. – Water Rescue 26, WR28, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 to the Oakdale Rec Area for a boat in distress. SR911 got a report of a boater whose engine stopped and was drifting downstream. Both boats launched and started a search. WR28 quickly found the boater and was able to tow them back to the launch point. None of the passengers were injured.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 22
Battalion 2: Crews worked on completing the end-of-the-year assignments in Vector Solutions.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Firefighters completed mandated Target Solutions assignments.
Engine 29 completed weekly apparatus checks and station maintenance at Station 30 in Valley Home.
9:25 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 26, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 to West J Street for a potential structure fire. Crews arrived to find a plastic appliance that was placed on a stove burner that was on. Engine 28 confirmed that the fire was out and that there was no extension to the structure. Firefighters remained on scene ventilating the structure.
3:49 a.m. – Engine 28 to Claribel and Oakdale-Waterford Highway for a vehicle fire. Engine 28 arrived on scene with a fully involved passenger vehicle. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire with no other damage.
TUESDAY, OCT. 21
Battalion 2: Crews rotated through wellness blood draws.
Crews attended FMA training at Yosemite and Riverside, walking through a large building and discussing fire potential.
Engine 26 crews worked on exhaust system maintenance and repairs.
Battalion 5: Crews worked on station maintenance and apparatus checks, rotated through the RFTC for annual physical blood draws, and trained in their FMA on various firefighting skill sets.
BC5 provided resource management while crews worked a residential structure fire in Battalion 3 area (Ceres) and while crews worked a residential garage fire in Battalion 1’s area (Modesto).
