The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, May 12 through Monday, May 18. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MAY 18
Annual pump testing continued at the Regional Fire Training Center.
Battalion 2: Monday apparatus inspections occurred across Battalion 2.
Companies completed individual skills practice during the shift.
Battalion 5: Companies completed weekly apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews completed weekly station maintenance.
Companies worked on completing mandatory online training.
SUNDAY, MAY 17
Battalion 2: 11:57 a.m. – Brush 24, Grass/Water Tender 23, OES 4615, and Battalion 2 responded to a vegetation fire in LaGrange on J59 near the Merced County line. CalFire responded with multiple engines and aircraft. Due to the high winds, the fire began to spread rapidly to the south towards the Merced County line. Additional engines and aircraft were requested to assist in containing the fire and protecting the structures in the area. The fire was contained at 191 acres. CalFire prevention is investigating the fire.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Battalion 5 companies were busy throughout the shift with wind related calls for service.
1:09 p.m. – Engine 9, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to an injury accident on Valley Home Road and River Road. Engine 9 arrived on scene of a two-vehicle accident and checked on injuries. Crews provided patient care for one patient with minor injuries. Engine 9 remained on scene to assist CHP with traffic control.
2:38 p.m. – Brush 28, Engine 21, Grass 19, Grass 21, Water Tender 21 and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a vegetation fire on Reinway in Waterford. Brush 28 arrived on scene to find a quarter-acre vegetation fire in the grass, in an almond orchard. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and holding it to under a half-acre. Crews remained on scene for an hour conducting mop up and extinguishing all fire.
Engine 28, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded for an injury accident on 26-Mile Road and Eastman reporting a vehicle vs. motorcycle. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find a motorcyclist down in the roadway and a second vehicle in the field. Engine 28 assisted Oak Valley with providing patient care on the motorcyclist who suffered major injuries. Engine 27 checked for injuries in the other vehicle. Once all patients were transported Engine 28 remained on scene and assisted with traffic control.
Water Rescue 29, Water Rescue 28, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to Morrison Road in Oakdale for a reported river rescue on the Stanislaus River in Knights Ferry. WR29 launched their boat from Station 29 along with the assistance of Air 101 located two kayakers who were on the shore behind a residence after their kayaks flipped over. Crews assisted with getting the kayakers back up to the road where the Sheriff’s Department personnel transported them to their vehicle.
12:34 a.m. (Monday) – Engine 26, Engine 27, Engine 9 and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a vegetation fire on Fourth Street in Riverbank. Engine 26 arrived on scene to find vegetation, and fencing on fire in a vacant lot. Crews were able to extinguish the fire limiting fire spread to an adjacent building. Crews were on scene mopping up for roughly 1½ hours.
SATURDAY, MAY 16
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed mandated Target Solution assignments.
Crews conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 9, Truck 1 and Battalion 5 assisted the Relay For Life with their opening ceremony. Medals were handed out to all of the cancer survivors at the start of the event for the ceremonial first lap. The Relay For Life is an annual event held across the nation to raise money for the American Cancer Society which will aid in cancer research, treatment and prevention. The Modesto Fire Department was honored to assist during this great event.
Water Rescue 29, and Water Rescue 28 trained on swift water boat operations on the Stanislaus River in Knights Ferry.
2 p.m. – Engine 27, WR26, WR28 and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a water rescue on River Road just behind the Del Rio Golf Course. Crews arrived on scene and located three subjects in front of the golf course. The party was able to get out of the river and to shore. Everyone was accounted for and the remainder of the response was cancelled.
FRIDAY, MAY 15

THURSDAY, MAY 14
Battalion 2: Water Rescue 26 and Battalion 2 participated in the training with the B Squad of SR911 dispatchers. Our focus was on Water Rescues, our response, and the equipment we use in performing the job.
Crews rotated through annual RT130 refresher at Turlock Lake.
4:43 p.m. – Brush 24, Grass/Water Tender 23, and Battalion 2 responded to a vegetation fire on Roberts Ferry Road near Highway 132. B24 was the first to arrive and reported a quarter-acre of heavy vegetation on fire and requested two additional wildland engines. OES 4617 and B28 were dispatched along with WT27. The fire was contained to the original quarter-acre and took approximately three hours to mop up. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
11:39 p.m. – Engine 23, Engine 28, and Battalion 2 responded to the area of Claribel and Albers for a vehicle vs. cow incident. E28 was the first to arrive and found two people with minor injuries. Oak Valley Ambulance treated the patients, and the fire units cleared. CHP is investigating the accident.
Battalion 5: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment maintenance.

7:24 a.m. – Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to a medical aid for a subject in cardiac arrest. Crews arrived on scene to find the patient in cardiac arrest and began BLS patient care. OVHD Medics arrived and began ALS patient care. After 30 minutes of care with no change, the patient was unfortunately declared deceased. OPD was on scene assisting.
11:53 a.m. – Engine 28, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded to an EMS call for a patient that had their hand caught in a riding lawn mower. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the patient who had significant trauma to their hand. Crews treated and packaged the patient and transported them to a local trauma center for treatment. 4:59 p.m. – OES 4617, WT 27 and Brush 28 assisted Battalion 2 companies with a vegetation fire at Highway 132 and Roberts Ferry Road, east of Waterford.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 13
11:18 a.m. – Engine 26, Engine 11, Engine/WT23, Truck 5 and BC1 provided mutual aid to the Escalon Fire District for a working residential structure fire. Battalion 2: 7:05 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to a roadside vegetation fire in the area of Claus Road and Claribel Road. The fire was quickly contained, and its cause is under investigation.
Battalion 5: 12:53 p.m. – Water Rescue 29, Engine 27, Water Rescue 24 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to a water rescue on the Stanislaus River near Horseshoe Bend on Orange Blossom Road in Oakdale. The report was that three teenage girls had fallen off their paddle board and raft and were stranded on the bank. Boat 29 launched from their Knights Fery Station and headed down river. Upon locating the three subjects, they said they were okay and just needed to get back to their vehicle. At that moment three other rafters had been tossed off their kayaks and were being swept downriver and just happened to pass by Boat 29. Boat 24 arrived on scene at this point and a total of six people were rescued off the river including their rafts. One was treated by Oak Valley ambulance at the scene for minor injuries.
TUESDAY, MAY 12
Crews participated in an exercise hosted by Stanislaus County OES and EMS. The exercise was to simulate a WMD event (Sarin Gas) release at 11th and K St. HazMat personnel and the MFD EMS division participated in the drill. Over 40 simulated patents were triaged, treated, and transported to area hospitals.
Battalion 2: MST Battalion Chiefs trained with the TCU Battalion Chiefs at Baseline Fire Center. We also toured the Columbia Air Attack Base after the training.
Crews trained with the fire recruits on hose evolutions.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 attended a training with Cal Fire at Baseline Fire Training Center. This training acts as a refresher of strategies and tactics for the upcoming wildland season.
Engine 28 conducted training on airbags and hose evolutions with their probationary firefighter.
Engine 7 rescued four ducklings from a storm drain in Riverbank.
