The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, May 27 through Monday, June 2. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JUNE 2
B-shift personnel completed day one of their search training. Crews simulated rescuing victims from a residential structure fire in a low-visibility environment.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews patrolled the vegetation fire at McHenry and Hogue from the previous shift to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
Battalion 5: Crews performed Monday apparatus checks and station yard maintenance, company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed Target Solutions assignments.
SUNDAY, JUNE 1
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks, as well as monthly EMS equipment checks.
4:09 p.m. – Grass and Water Tender 21, Quint 22, Grass and Water Tender 23, Brush 24, Engine and Water Tender 27, and Battalion 2 responded to a report of a vegetation fire at the intersection of Highway 132 and Reservoir Road. While enroute Sheriff’s deputies reported there was a house that was threatened by the vegetation fire. Battalion 2 requested additional resources because of the threat to the house. Engine 24 arrived at the incident and took immediate action to protect the structure. Crews saved the structure and were on the scene for a couple of hours extinguishing the fire.
7:39 p.m. – Stanislaus Engine 26 was dispatched to a smoke check at McHenry and Hogue Avenue and upon arrival found a two- to three-acre vegetation fire burning in a mixture of fuels. Two more units were requested. B12, B3, WT/E27 and BC1 responded. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire. Crews remained on scene for a couple more hours to mop up and overhaul hot spots.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 attended a public education event at the Oakdale Seventh day Adventist church.
Crews continued to check a fire on Burchell Hills Court that will be smoking for a few more days. Crews will continue to monitor as the pile of walnut hulls burns out.
Boat 29 and 28 responded multiple times to rafters stuck on the Stanislaus River in high flows with not the right equipment or experience to be on the river.
11:08 a.m. – Engine 29, 28, and BC5 responded to Stone Road for a motorcycle rider down. On scene crews had adult that had a broken femur after a fall. Engine 29 provided ALS care to the patient. The patient was quickly packaged and flown to a local trauma center.
SATURDAY, MAY 31
Dozer academy concluded today. MFD’s fuel reduction crew worked on direct fire attack with dozers, firing techniques off a dozer line, firing using drip torches, hand thrown, and pistol launched ignition devices.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Station 26 participated in the Riverbank Farmers Market. Personnel provided fire safety information and displayed Water Rescue 26.
9:38 p.m. – Engine 1, Engine 3, Engine 23, Engine 24, Engine 28, Quint 22, Battalion 2, Battalion 3 and Medic 1 were dispatched to the 900 block of Elma Street in Hickman for a working structure fire. Engine 24 arrived on scene to find nothing showing from a single-story residence. There was light smoke inside the structure. After determining the source of the smoke was an overheated HVAC system, crews shut the power off to the unit and canceled the response.
Battalion 5: 3:34 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and BC5 responded to a vehicle that rolled over in the 12000 block of Victory Avenue in Oakdale. Crews arrived to find the driver uninjured and refusing medical treatment. Law enforcement remained on scene and all fire units cleared.
3:53 p.m. – Boat 29, Engine 28 and BC5 responded to a report of eight rafters stranded after being pinned by the current against brush and trees on the Stanislaus River. Boat 29 arrived to find their rafts deflated and the victims clinging to the trees. Boat 29 rescued all of them and brought them to the bank. There were no injuries to any of the rafters,
9:31 p.m. – Engine 27, OES 4618 and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire on Highway 108 near Walker Road. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and all units cleared.
FRIDAY, MAY 30
The MST and Cal Fire Dozer Operator Academy continued with live fire training and operating with air resources.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 2 participated in the Dozer Academy live fire exercises at Turlock Lake.
11:06 a.m. – Grass 23, Water Tender 23, Engine 24, and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a vegetation fire near the Tuolumne River in Waterford. Upon arrival, Engine 24 located a quarter-acre of vegetation on fire in the river bottom moving at a slow rate of spread. Firefighters were able to quickly stop the forward progress of the fire. Crews were on scene for two hours mopping up the fire.
Battalion 5: 5:15 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire in the 6000 block of River Road. Crews extinguished the fire in short order and all units cleared.
THURSDAY, MAY 29
The Haz Mat Team conducted monthly team training with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad.
The MST and CAL FIRE Dozer academy continued training.
Battalion 2: Engine 26 and Quint 22 assisted two local schools in celebrating the last day of school. Empire Elementary and Cardozo Middle School.
7:10 p.m. – Engine 7 and Battalion 2 responded to a non-injury accident at the intersection of Roselle Avenue and Patterson Road. There were two vehicles involved. The Riverbank Police Department is investigating the accident.
Battalion 5: 9:43 a.m. – Engine 27, Water Tender 27, Brush 28 OES 4615 and BC5 were dispatched to a vegetation fire at the end of Burchell Hill Road near the river bottom in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene and had one-and-a-half acres of heavy brush and trees burning. CalFire BC4414, Engine 4486, Engine 4455, OES 4618, Grass/Water Tender 23 and Water Tender 6 responded to the scene. The fire was contained in two hours. Crews remained on scene throughout the afternoon and into Friday morning to monitor a large pile of fallen trees and roots.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 28
The MST and Cal Fire Dozer Operator Academy completed the second day of training.
MST companies rotated through carbon monoxide monitoring training at Station 22.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 27 trained on deploying hose lines and advancing into structures.
TUESDAY, MAY 27
The Central Valley Incident Management Team comprised of members from MST and Cal Fire TCU conducted training at Baseline Fire Center. The training consisted of transitioning an incident over to the Team and creating the first operational plan.
MST and Cal Fire TCU began the weeklong Second Annual Dozer Operator Academy at Turlock Lake. Multiple agencies from across the state are participating in the academy which is one of few that is offered in the state.
Battalion 2: MST personnel prepared the search training site for June training.
Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews attended EMS training at Station 22.
Station 21 and 26 personnel prepared the new OES Type VI for emergency operations.
Battalion 5: Crews performed daily apparatus checks and station maintenance, company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed Target Solutions assignments.
Battalion 5 companies rotated through Masimo EMS training.
Boat 29 and Boat 28 conducted Water Rescue training in Knights Ferry. Flows are going to remain high for the next few weeks.
8:30 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 26, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 responded to a natural gas leak inside the residence in 12000 block of 26-Mile Road in Oakdale. E27 arrived on scene and was able to shut the gas off to the residence. The remainder of the response was cancelled, and Engine 27 remained on scene for PG&E.
