A Riverbank man died on Dec. 30 in a three-car crash on Highway 120 west of Kennedy Road near Knights Ferry.

Manuel Castanon, 76, had stopped his Honda on the south shoulder of eastbound Highway 120 about 12:30 p.m. and was attempting to make a u-turn to the westbound direction without making sure it was safe to do so, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Another driver Mark Herman, 51, of Modesto was driving a 2007 Cadillac westbound at about 55 mph while a third driver Selina Basran, 24, of Modesto was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi eastbound at about 50 mph.

When Castanon pulled out for the u-turn, the front of his Honda collided with the left rear of the Mitsubishi and the front of the Cadillac collided with the Honda driver's door.

After the collision, the Honda came to rest on its wheels blocking the westbound lane of the highway, while the Cadillac came to rest on its wheels blocking the eastbound lane.

Castanon sustained fatal injuries and died at Oak Valley Hospital while his wife Cecelia Castanon, 70 who was with him, was taken to Doctors Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Basran and a passenger Kristie Wright, 28, of Modesto suffered moderate injuries and another of her passengers, Rickvir Basran, 21 sustained minor injuries. All were treated at Memorial Medical Center. A third passenger Angelo Flores, 27, was unharmed.

Herman, the driver of the Cadillac, and both his passengers, Ralph Herman, 78 and Patricia Herman, also 78, were uninjured.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash according to the CHP. It appeared everyone was wearing a seatbelt except for the backseat passenger in the Mitsubishi, who sustained minor injuries.
