Riverbank High's coed tennis team (No. 2 seed from the Trans-Valley League) hosted Colfax (No. 3 seed from the Pioneer League) on Monday to kick off the first round of the Division III Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs, though results were not available at press time.

Regardless of the outcome, the Bruins have more to play for than a 21-team bracket composed of teams from seven different conferences.

Bruin standouts Eric Hernandez and Armando Rodriguez also qualified to a two-day showdown between the best two doubles tandems from all seven leagues during bracket play at the Oak Park Tennis Courts in Stockton on May 3 and 4.

Hernandez and Rodriguez outplayed Zach Mando and Rafael Felix of Escalon to escape with title honors during the TVL Tourney on April 27 and 28 at the Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club in Modesto. The two also finished ahead of Ripon standouts Kevin Thompson and Anthony Victory, who ultimately finished third.

Riverbank's mixed doubles team of Rigo Calderon and Celena Hernandez also rallied to a semifinal appearance, but were ultimately dispatched to the third place match, which they won. The pair was just one win short of a top-two finish and SJS qualification. Riverbank's girls doubles team of Caroline Schauf and Hermelinda Soto won several matches during TVL tourney action as well.

Hernandez and Rodriguez will be seeded into the SJS individual tournament, likely to face a No. 2 qualifier from the PVL, Mother Lode League, Golden Empire League, Sierra Delta League, Southern League or Sierra Valley Conference. The first round of the individual tourney begins at 10 a.m.
