Meeting up with some high-powered teams in the Oakdale Rotary Classic Tournament, the varsity Bruins took one win off the basketball court in the three games they played.

The tournament ran Dec. 27, 29 and 30 with the Bruins facing off first with Enochs on Saturday, Dec. 27 and losing a 74-39 decision.

"It was a somewhat close game at halftime," said coach Jeff Jennings.

But Enochs poured it on in the second half.

"With their size, they have three kids over 6-7, we couldn't contain them," the coach said.

Back on the court for a Monday game, Dec. 29 against Calaveras, it was a team the Bruins had seen once already, but still had trouble handling.

"Calaveras shoots the ball really well," explained Jennings. "We didn't get out to screen them."

The Redskins took a 53-36 win off the court, with the Bruins still having trouble getting into the 40s.

"We struggled a little bit offensively," agreed Jennings.

The team rebounded with a solid effort in the final round against Trans-Valley League foe Hughson, winning by a 50-43 margin on Tuesday, Dec. 29 to close out the calendar year with a victory.

"Lucas Pope had a good game against Hughson, he shot really well, and Jose Moreno had a really good tournament," Jennings said. "We were missing two kids, Chris Nunez was gone, he's a big part of what we do and we lost guard Ala Nasser, he went down with an injury against Enochs."

Riverbank has a couple of weeks before league play starts to get their game on track. They face off with Mother Lode League squads now, with the boys slated to host Linden on Friday, Jan. 9 and Summerville, on Tuesday, Jan. 13. The freshmen kick things off at 4:30 p.m. with the JV games starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity taking the court at 7:30 p.m.

Jennings, whose team has compiled a 6-6 mark so far, said he's seen some solid play but also knows they have some areas to improve on before doing battle with the tough TVL teams.

"Once we start sharing the ball a little bit more, we'll do better," he said. "We also need to work on getting the higher percentage shots."
