The Riverbank High softball team squandered a possible berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Softball tournament, yet the squad surely wanted to send its seniors out on a high note and that is exactly what happened during a 13-0 blowout over the Ripon Indians.
The fun got going in a hurry when senior Irene Castillo came to the plate and stroked a bases loaded double, giving the Lady Bruins all the offensive support they would need in the season finale.
Riverbank closed out the season with a 6-8 mark in Trans-Valley League play, coming up just short on one of the TVL's three postseason openings. Riverbank struggled down the stretch, dropping games to Modesto Christian, Hughson and their May 7 loss to Escalon sealing the deal.
Riverbank could not get anything going offensively, combining for just three hits on Escalon's Caitlin Brooks in the loss. The Cougars, playing for a stake of the TVL title, pushed across their first run in the second inning and put things out of reach with a four run fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Carlye Avey did all she could to keep the Lady Bruins in the ball game, scattering seven hits through seven innings of work. The freshman hurler owns one of the brightest futures in the TVL, competing at an extremely high level in just her first run through the high school action. The Lady Bruins have a lot to look forward to, returning some quality talent for another push at a postseason berth. Riverbank is losing a host of talent and leadership, but the voids left by graduating seniors will have to be picked up by the returning starters like Avey and outfielder Cali Avey. Kailyn Pavalos will also have to share the bulk of team leadership.
With the three TVL playoff berth going to league co-champs Escalon and Modesto Christian along with the Hughson Huskies, the Lady Bruins know that they can surely play with these teams, beating them is their primary hurdle.
