Track And Field Bruins Off To Strong Start
RHS

Track season has started, and the Bruins have seen action in a couple of meets.

On Saturday, March 3 a few athletes competed at the Sierra Relays in Manteca.

Zac Richison placed second overall in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.21. The frosh/soph boys distance medley relay placed second overall. That team consisted of Nico Pulido, Adan Salgado, Isaac Andalon, and Ramon Rosas.

Marissa Castellanos placed seventh overall in the varsity girls discus and freshman Cecilia Leon placed 10th overall in the varsity girls discus.

“Cecilia would have placed second in the frosh/soph girls discus,” head coach Monte Wood noted.

More athletes competed in the Stanislaus County Championships on Friday, March 9.

“Alondra Hernandez defended her 800 meter title by out kicking a Gregori athlete over the last 300 meters,” Wood said. “Alondra was sitting in second almost 40 meters behind when she made her move with 300 meters to go. She caught the Gregori athlete with about 80 meters to go and won convincingly.”

She also set a three-second PR in the 800, breaking the mark she set last year at the County meet.

Chris Martinez followed Alondra with a second place finish in the boys 800.

“He ran a 2:04 which was a six-second PR for him,” Wood added. “In the same race Isaac Andalon finished the 800 in 2:10 to set a huge PR for him.”

In the girls 100 Savannah Macias finished fourth overall which is the highest finish in recent times in the girls 100 for a Riverbank athlete. She ran a 13.21 fully automatic time.

“With a little more training and some warm weather, she is a definite threat to break the school record,” Wood said. “She also the led the 4x100 relay team in qualifying to the County Clash on Friday, March 23 in Oakdale.”

Zac Richison was sixth overall in the triple jump. He had a misstep in the hurdles that cost him a second place finish, but he still qualified to the County Clash in the 110 hurdles.

Both 4x100 relay teams and the boys 4x400 relay teams qualified to the County Clash. Marissa Castellanos qualified in the discus to the County Clash also.

The Bruins were also scheduled to host the Trans-Valley League Relays, weather permitting, on Tuesday, March 20 after The News went to press.
