Riverbank Tennis Headed To Stockton

Getting on the court for some postseason action, the Riverbank High tennis team got a superb effort from No. 1 boys doubles tandem of Matt Nelson and Michael Nelson to take the Trans-Valley League doubles title and lead a pair of Bruin duos into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Coed Individual Tennis Tournament beginning Thursday, May 8 in Stockton.

Riverbank expanded on an already impressive season when they took home the doubles title over a resilient Modesto Christian squad. The Nelson brothers teamed up to make their mark on the doubles circuit, earning a spot in the sections, which invites the top two players/teams in each of the five divisions.

As a team, Riverbank's impressive 9-3 TVL campaign gives the entire team a berth in the Section Co-ed Team tennis tournament. The Bruins opened play with a trip to Orestimba (results were not available at press time) and a victorious showing there would usher Riverbank into Mother Lode Country to take on Bret Harte, which took first place in the Mother Lode League.

"If we can beat Orestimba," Riverbank head coach Bruce Edwards said, "we'll have a tough match with Bret Harte on their courts Monday (May 12). We are really, as a team, staying busy. We are focusing on the team play and our individuals, of course, are going to be getting ready for their stuff too."

Riverbank's mixed-doubles team of Danny Geren and Raquel Medina closed out tournament action at the SOS club in Modesto with a second place finish, good for a spot alongside the Nelson twins at Oak Park in Stockton.
