Speedy Bret Harte Team Outpaces Bruins

Scoring just one point to their opponents 14 in the second quarter, a Riverbank basketball team ultimately lost that ball game, 58-41, to Bret Harte

Trailing by 15-10 in Tuesday's opening quarter, the junior varsity boys fell so far behind in the second quarter that their 14-24 third period and 17-13 fourth quarter advantage failed to salvage the situation.

"Bret Harte was a solid team," said Bruin coach Derrick Burnett. "Defensively, we were beaten to the ball too often. That allowed them to score more easily and more often than we would have liked. Then offensively, of course, we lost it in the second quarter."

Ivan Nunez, Ryan Williams and Levi Luca all hit eight points each to lead the Bruin scoring.

The second quarter was again a bad one for the Bruins in their second away game in the week, against Sonora on Friday.

Trailing, 10-6, in the opening period, the Bruins saw their opponents pile up 23 points to their own nine in the second quarter. Sonora continued to lead, 16-12, in the third period and 13-10 in the final quarter.

"We had only seven players available for this game, including two freshmen, Joe Ramos and Robert Sandoval, who we pulled up for substitution purposes, " said Burnett.

The Bruins played hard, but just made too many mistakes to stay level with Sonora.

"I am proud of our effort and very impressed with Joe and Robert's performance. They played very well," he added.

Leading scorers for Riverbank were Omar Fernandez, with 11 points, Luca, with 8, and Sandoval, with 7.
