Beneath a bright blue sky – and with plenty of wind – a myriad of colorful kites weaved in and out as they explored the open air this past Saturday during Kite Day at Silva Park in Riverbank. Dozens of families came out to enjoy some quality time, design their own kites, and pick up some new books. Love Riverbank and Riverbank Federated Women’s Club organized the May 16 program to encourage families to come out and enjoy the beautiful weather while meeting new friends within the community.

Both little kids and big ones alike had fun chasing their kites as they gathered speed in the breeze. With representatives on hand from the Oakdale Riverbank Book Exchange along with Friends of the Riverbank Library, Love Riverbank and the Riverbank Federated Women’s Club on hand, there were treats, books and exciting activities for the entire family.

Kathleen Heinzinger and her husband Mark moved to Riverbank almost two years ago and are now working to bring more folks to the Riverbank Library through the Friends of the Riverbank Library Organization.

“We volunteered with the Friends of the Modesto Library when we lived in Modesto and we want to bring more attention to the wonderful library we have right here in Riverbank,” said Kathleen Heinzinger.

Noting the many activities the Riverbank Library hosts including watercolor painting, crafts for kids and adults, and book clubs among others, Heinzinger and her fellow volunteers want to ensure that everyone knows what resources and engaging activities are available any given day at the library.

For Michelle Cuenca and Brittany Gramberg of the Oakdale Riverbank Book Exchange, events like this present opportunities to remind local residents of the little free libraries that are spread throughout Riverbank and several other Stanislaus County communities.

“We like getting books and filling up the libraries but sharing free books with others is the best part,” said Gramberg.

Bringing community together, exploring nature and learning new things like how to fly a kite are just some of the ways that Love Riverbank is working to build relationships and encourage support throughout the community. For more information on events like this, visit: loveriverbank.com
