Riverbank High's varsity Track, Softball, Tennis and Golf teams tackled conference and tournament opposition during recent contests.

Track and Field

The Bruins excelled at the MLL-TVL challenge in Angels Camp on Thursday and saw the TVL claim titles among both boys and girls divisions.

Mikayla Florez won both the 1600 meter (5 minute, 15 second season best) and 800 while Tiffany Edgar claimed a high jump victory. Erica Orellana set a personal record (28.5 seconds) to finish runner-up in the 200 while Adriana Rosales ended second in the 3200 with a 12:05 personal best time.

Melissa Garcia hit a new top mark of 33 feet, 1 inch to end second in the shot put while Riverbank's 1600 relay girls were No. 2 finishers.

The boys saw a meet championship from the 1600 relay team of Joel Carillo, Adrian Salazar, Ray Burney, and Christian Torres. Fabian Arana was second in the discus with a new personal best of 134 feet. Luis Figueroa ended second in the 1600 with a 4:45 PR as well.

"Overall, the freshmen and sophomores continue to shine even against varsity competition," Riverbank coach Monte Wood said. "We have a few of our upperclassmen performing well, but the younger kids are definitely leading this team right now."

Softball

The Bruins opened league play with an 8-5 win over Escalon on March 21 after Amanda Lopez burned a two-run home run over the left field fence to key an early inning five-run uprising. Riverbank capitalized on costly Escalon errors to steal the opener. The Bruins would go on to make mistakes of their own during a 10-1 loss to Orestimba just two days later.

Tennis

The Bruins bounced back from a 9-0 loss to reigning conference champion Escalon by ousting Modesto Christian 6-3 in a showdown at the Modesto SOS Club on March 23. Boys doubles Juan Alfaro and Ernie Velasco won in 6-1, 3-6, 6-5 scores while Riverbank's mixed doubles tandem of Celena Hernandez and Rigo Calderon won 6-5, 6-3. Eric Hernandez won in 3-6, 6-0,7-6 scores while Armando Rodriguez won after a pair of 6-2 games, with Hermelinda Soto and Caroline Schauf claiming a pair of 6-5 victories.

Golf

Riverbank is unable to record official team scores without a full five-man team, but saw Casey Floyd (38 strokes), Zack Vannest (48), Dominick Mulkey (51) and Zach Woods (63) turn in sharp scores during a loss to Hughson at the River Oaks Golf Course on Friday.
