Young Riverbank wrestlers found varsity success in a barrage of action from a Trans-Valley League dual meet with Hughson and competition in the Lloyd C. Engel Tournament in Escalon on Friday and Saturday.

At the Engel, 130-pound Jesus Carillo and heavyweight Javier Gaxiola each finished top-6, just one win shy of a medal.

Carillo was up 3-2 in the third period of his to-medal match, but allowed a Sierra wrestler to snare a late reversal and back points for an 8-3 decision. In the same round, Gaxiola was downed by a wrestler from Elk Grove to narrowly miss placement.

The Bruins saw several other wins throughout the tourney, including three pins from Angel Duarte (189 pounds). Maurico Tovar (152) and Ruben Lopez (112) also nabbed two wins apiece in tightly contested brackets. Alberto Perez (160) and Omar Flores (125) also won matches for Riverbank.

The Bruins fought valiantly in a 60-10 loss to Hughson during TVL action on Jan. 12. Ben Hodges improved his TVL record to 2-1 with a 17-8 toppling of Joseph Dias at 145 pounds. Gaxiola also preserved his undefeated 3-0 league stanza with a forfeit win at heavyweight.

Riverbank's junior varsity team got some good action, but slipped to Hughson 36-24.

The Bruins continue TVL action today in a dual with host Hilmar at 6:30 p.m.
