Downtown Party Celebrates Summer

To kick start summer, downtown Riverbank is throwing a big party on Thursday, June 5. The Blues 'n Bibs event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m.

Headlining the festival will be musical group 'Big Earl and the Cryin' Shame' providing the blues, while vendors and non-profit organizations will supply the food.

Businesses located between Third and Santa Fe streets will be open to welcome shoppers. More than two dozen classic Corvette automobiles will be assembled along Santa Fe Street and vendors will be located throughout that area. The event will also be a fundraising opportunity for local non-profit organizations that will be donating 20 percent of their net proceeds to downtown projects.

Part of the goal of the evening, city officials said, is to draw people downtown so they can see the progress being made on the revitalization project. City Manager Rich Holmer said they try to stage a special downtown event each quarter, with the last one being centered around a Valentine's theme and this one focusing on summer.

To entice shoppers to visit the downtown merchants, there will be a raffle. Shoppers will be given an entry card to stamp at the first business they visit. Cards will then be validated at each participating business and entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to spend at participating downtown stores. Three certificates valued at $25 each will be awarded to the winners. There is no charge to enter the drawing for the gift certificates.

Everyone is invited to come downtown, shop the local merchants, and enjoy good blues and barbeque. To commemorate the event and keep the BBQ sauce away from clean shirts, bibs bearing the 'Blues 'n Bibs' logo will be distributed to all who attend.

Admission to the event is free. Food and beverages will be offered for sale at various locations throughout the event.
