For the many folks that came out to dine, shop and stroll through downtown Riverbank for the ‘Evening Market’ on Saturday, April 18, they were also treated to some delightful dance performances. Dancers from the Alegria Performing Arts Academy in Turlock performed dances that paid tribute to Jalisco, Mexico, known as the birthplace of mariachi and jaripeo.
“We love performing dances that highlight our culture and ties to our community here and in Jalisco,” said Emily Barrita-Perez, Dance Instructor and Choreographer at Alegria.
For Kit Barrita-Perez, one of the featured dancers and sister to Emily, dancing is a way to honor her heritage.
“Through our costumes and dances, we celebrate our traditions and the meaning behind them and how it connects to our culture in Mexico,” she explained Dancing with Alegria for more than two years, Kit plans on continuing her studies in movement and noted how much she enjoys learning and dancing with her sister – and instructor – Emily.
For spectators like Sylvia Klein of Salida, she and her husband came out to peruse the various booths and activities at the evening market and the dance performances added to their enjoyment of the entire experience
“Our first house was here in Riverbank and we just loved it. The performances were wonderful and the market with all of the food vendors and the artists with their crafts made the whole evening just perfect,” said Klein.
The Alegria Performing Arts Academy has been bringing rhythm to the Central Valley for many years and in addition to offering classes in folklorico, which is one of the classes that Barrita-Perez teaches, they have courses in ballet, hip hop, jazz, ballroom, cheer, country, swing and many more. Courses are offered to ages three and up and provide a multitude of benefits from exercise to balance and strength training.
Meanwhile, as part of the market itself, attendees found everything from kebabs to sweet treats, as there were delectable choices up and down the street while just around the corner flavorful dining options including: Black Sheep Kitchen and Cocktails, Pizza Plus and the new restaurant Kinfolks, which offers classics as well as new dishes with a fusion flair catered to those that wanted to sit and relax while enjoying their meal.
The Riverbank Evening Markets will continue every other Saturday through May with the next one coming up on Saturday, May 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., along Third Street in downtown Riverbank.
