Thursday, May 28, the California State Assembly reached the Constitutional “House of Origin” deadline, at which point any Assembly Bill (AB) not passed out of the Assembly and transmitted to the Senate, is considered dead.
Assemblyman Heath Flora successfully revived a piece of legislation that was vetoed last year by Governor Newsom in the wake of the Palisades Fires. That veto garnered a lot of attention across the state as well as outside of California.
“We said it last year, so we’ll say it again, it was disappointing to see this bill get vetoed when our state’s frontline wildland firefighters are on an almost year-round rotation risking their personal safety to protect the lives and homes of others,” said Flora. “My bill, now called AB 2129, just asks the state to bring CalFire pay more in-line with the average pay scale for many of the local fire departments found across the state.”
Another bill that was passed before Thursday’s deadline by Flora was AB 1939, which authorizes licensed professional fiduciaries to form professional corporations. This bill will enhance regulatory oversight and consumer protection. Fiduciaries can be privately hired or appointed by the courts to act as trustees, executors, and managers of estates and personal affairs. This is a technical but needed bill, the assemblyman noted.
“I’m especially proud to have bipartisan support on these bills,” Flora added.
