Nuts, Champions For Change Kick Off Walking Program
Nuts Logo

This season, the Modesto Nuts Baseball Club and a coalition of regional partners are supporting health and wellness through the launch of “Intentional Walk,” a community walking program taking place between June 9 and Aug. 18. In baseball, an intentional walk can be a beneficial play to help a team improve their chance for success. The Intentional Walk program kick-off event and ceremonial “first walk” will be Saturday, June 9 from noon to 2:30 p.m. and will feature program partners and community participants walking together for better health.

Intentional Walk encourages families to get active through walking and track their distance through the Argus mobile app for the opportunity to win fun rewards. Prizes include healthy recipe cookbooks, meet and greet opportunities with Modesto Nuts players, and the chance to throw out a first pitch. The Modesto Nuts have also created a special walking route within John Thurman Field to support participation and physical activity before and during Nuts games.

Adults, children and community stakeholders will kick off the Intentional Walk program by participating in an energetic group pre-walk stretching routine and the ceremonial “first walk” led by Nuts mascots. The event will also feature an expo area where participants can learn how walking can contribute to better health.

John Thurman Field is at 601 Neece Dr., Modesto; attendees can arrive and park in the east parking lot off Neece Drive.

Intentional Walk is supported by the Modesto Nuts Baseball Club, the Argus walking app, the Heart Coalition of Stanislaus County, the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, Champions for Change Program – an initiative of the California Department of Public Health’s Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch, and the City of Modesto.

Walking helps support a healthy weight, control heart disease and diabetes, keeps bones and muscles strong and improves balance to help prevent falls. With adults requiring 150 minutes of physical activity a week and kids needing 60 minutes of active play every day, walking with intention can be a strategic move for adults and families to be active and improve their health.
